I think it's the same as with mud. Either a very high volume or a super skinny tyre will work. If the sand is not to deep the skinny tyre cuts through and grips on the ground underneath. I have a set of Bontrager Mud-X tyres for the 26er and they are very narrow but ride like a dream in mud.

2.35 Racing Ralph or Nobby Nick run nice and low ( depending on weight and other terrain) perhaps 1.1-1.2 front and 1.6-1.8 rear.

Remember to lock the front shock before hitting the sand or just lock it anyway. ( to prevent nosedive)

Any wide tire run at low pressure should do the trick. I used Vredenstein Killer Bees on Imana, they work well.
