Over priced!

Jeez, that's not bad at all. When I was at varsity and trying my hand at surfing - and this is 20 years ago - I bought a Spider Murphy board for just over a grand.

Still is one of the most affordable sports.....if you live on the coast that is :-)

Ja, I was never any good at it, but loved it nonetheless. Gonna have another stab at it in about a month when I'm on leave.

I just finished three toasted egg, cheese and bacon sarms from my canteen at work. Cost me R27 for all three. Is that overpriced?

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day... you can never skimp on that. R9 one, that isn't bad. My breakfast was 3 Scrambled eggs, pork sausage, bacon and chicken livers. R30

Over priced! ?

It's all relative, you can buy a R2000 bike or you can buy a R100000 bike. Just like with cars, watches etc etc. it's all about how much you're willing to spend and if you have your thinking cap on: how much value you see in it.

Apparently Chris Froome was riding a real klunker at the Commonwealth Games in 2006 when David Brailsford spotted him, so maybe its not about the bike ...

Skandaal! If only the late Isabel Jones was still around, she would expose that over priced, under nourishing breakfast for what it really is...

On my recent visit to Vancouver I spotted a Ford F150 (similar to our Ranger, possibly with a bigger load box) for $19 995, zero interest, zero deposit, payable over 84 months. That's $238 per month, no interest, or about 2380 ZAR. Here the Ranger equivalent costs R248 400 (super cab petrol) with interest at prime and zero deposit it would cost you 3428.32 ZAR or $343.

I also saw an S Works Epic for $8900 (about R89 000) which is on par for what we pay.

I also busted a rear derreulier on day 5 of a 7 day race. Guess what it cost to replace (include new brake pads and a brake bleed): $585! Same job here would have been around R3500.

I'm not sure who's ripping who off, but I'm confident that our bike prices are not inflated compared to the rest of the world. We have very cheap labour, so looking after our bikes are much cheaper and we pay a premium for items like cars here.

As a matter of interest, a ribeye steak in a supermarket was about $38 / kg. It was a damn fine steak though.

Sheez, is your derailleur gold plated(or XTR)? And did they use 20 year old single malt for your brake fluid?

Nah, I believe there is a road and mtb to fit each person. I don't spend crap loads of money on my mtb or road bike but enjoy it thoroughly.

Labour was more than 50% of the bill. It also explains why a bike mechanic can make a decent living there.

is this a serious thread?

So: I've seen people pay more for a meal than what a family earns in 6 months in Kenya.

All the costs add up... bike factory makes bike and sells it to distributor, adding cost + 25% (or whatever %). Distributor adds profit margin and sells to lbs. Lbs add profit margin and sells to customer. In the end you pay much much more for a bike that what it cost to make. And it's the same in most industries. Overseas they have brands that sell direct to public (e.g. Boardman bikes, Canyon, etc) which are good quality, but more affordable.

Then again, you don't need an expensive bike to have fun and there are plenty of 2nd hand bargains.

Bicyxle equipment... sounds pretty Specialised... probably should be expensive.

Yeah so specialised that the Bicycle that is more than 130 years old in the safety bicycle design has stayed basically the same. Steel Ball bearings have been replaced by porcelain ball bearing. Beautiful lugged steel frames has been replaced with plastic frames, derraileurs were used for the first time in the 1937 TdF still do the same job. They derial and move the chain to stepped gears. Pretty specialised?????? and extremely slow development if measured against the motor car. The first Model-T Ford was built in 1908 and compare motor car development to bicycle development.

All that is happening is that the ponytails in the bicycle industry is taking your vanity for a ride by making you feel inadequate with sly advertising.

Prime examples are:-

Cervelo

White bikes

The twenty naainer.
