Fake / Counterfeit Bikes & Components: News and how to spot them

I suspect that is because the fakers make or copy a mould, and then mass produce with the cheapest low grade carbon they can get. That and selling direct means they can still make a good profit. It looks as if they are not able to use the same business model with metal parts.

Your assumption is correct to a point - obviously the cheaper the material the more profit.  However in the great scheme of things, the cost of low grade carbon is not hugely cheaper than decent carbon. One of the biggest cost factors in producing the frame is the mold itself and the labour required to produce it - so skimping on the carbon doesn't save a whole lot.  (I'm not saying it doesn't happen though).

In terms of costs you can rate these in terms of overall production costs (from high to low):

R&D

Mold

Staff skills

Material

The reputable Chinese blanks have been using the same molds for the past 5 years, so you can write of R&D and Molds from their expenses i.e. two biggest expenses.  They also don't have the associated cost of the marketing machines behind the big names.  Hence the lower costs.

Yes, you get a crap out of china.  But yes, you can also get a blank frame as good as any other of China.

An easy way to avoid fakes would be to buy metal stuff.

bad news bro ive seen an aluminium bianchi c2c with carbon fork which is truly a thing of beauty its was spotless if I hadn't been told it was from china I would never have dreamt

you just don't see them because the money is in carbon

some of the carbon from china is really good that's why the manufacturers are getting so pissed off

if the china carbons would keep breaking it wouldn't be a problem they would just blow away  ...the real problem is they don't keep breaking

Hey guys.  I want to upgrade to a Campy EPS system...or if I have to Di2.  anyone know if it is possible to do it through Alibaba or Aliexpress?  I've saved up 75% just want to find out if there is a cheaper way and if it is even worth it?

Saw a warning for fake FSA carbon seat posts, carbon bars and carbon stems in the UK and Europe.

The warning comes after a few very serious crashes due to failing parts

Guessing that they'll be in SA to then.

If you are unsure the check the product with a UV light...FSA has hidden logo on all original parts.

FAKE GOODS:

Please be aware of fake and potentially dangerous FSA goods being offered very cheaply on ebay. This K force seatpost is made of a glass fibre tube with a carbon wrap and separate seat clamp. Genuine K Force seat posts always have a monocoque carbon fibre post and clamp.

sheesh gummi, hope you were not on the bike ...!

Not me...from FSA agents fb page.

One guy had to have carbon splinters surgically removed from his leg.

Another broke his wrists...yes both...when his bars broke.

Good lawd.

There must be few things more horrifying on the bike than feeling the bar snap.

Kinda makes me worries about a FSA carbon handlebar I bought for "cheap" from a fellow hubber last year...been lasting though...Any way to determine if mine is original?

All my MTB bars are Alu, carbon only on my road bikes but what makes me wonder is that I see many many MTBrs with carbon bars and seatposts and personally I don't know anyone that has had one fail ... not saying they don't but is it really that prevalent?
