In July last year I ran out of talent which ended up in me getting a plate and 4 screws in my collar bone. At the time my doctor recommended leaving it in forever. I have heard a few conflicting views and was wondering, who has left the plate in and who has taken it out?

Not exactly the same - but I have a pin and screws elsewhere that I was told to leave be and I have been 2 years without any major issues with the Titanium.

Reason why mine were left is that the joint is now stronger and no harm leaving in the weather prediction pins.

All my hardware still in. (11 years)

Mostly because the Dr could not get the pin in my humerus out.

My take on it - if there is a risk of another fracture - take it out.

My layman take on it is if their is still going to be bone growth going into the future it is beter to remove it as leaving it in woul inhibit the growth and lead to further fractures.

However if you are done growing their is no need for removal

the weather prediction goes away with time. I shattered my elbow, ulna and radius in rugby in matric and have a number of plates and screws in my arm. That was 17yrs ago. I had hassles for about 10yrs, but its 100% fine now

I have pins and plates in a remanufactured left elbow. Been there for 12 years. I have pins and screws in my left thumb and hand, been there for more than 10 years. I have a plate and screws in my left collarbone which have been there for about 14 years BUT I did have some screws removed from an errant shoulder blade....

Not being a doctor I didn't have much say in these.... I listened to their expert opinion, got a few 2nd opinions and accepted that they know a whole lot better than me and got on with my rehab.

The pain comes and goes, the elbow is grossly misshaped, the winter is a pain but it hasn't stopped me doing anything. And if it hurts like hell I go check it out and re assess.

Listen to your doctors, they probably know a thing or 2 about this stuff
