So I am going to tackle the 94.7 road race this year and instead of getting a road bike I am going to convert a spare set of rims to a "road" setup.

Am hoping to get some advice on tyres in this regard

Was thinking probably these

with these as a possible option too

I take it that running a tubeless setup is not possible with these tires either.

Any advice etc welcome.

Ok you asked for it.....don't do it, its such a schlep and will cost you money and looks hondnaai. Just go on your bike as is. Leave it dirty from the Saturday's ride for extra points.

Do I get extra points for riding my old, steel, converted to SS, rigid MTB on the spruit with road tires? :)

Go for the Continental Sport Contact 26x1.3

Really great tires, and super fast rolling. We run then on our two old Giant Cadex, never had an issue. And you will feel the difference! Did the Argus and all my training last year on them.

Hehe, typical hub responses.

I have the rims already, so R220 a tire is much cheaper than a 2k bike, and I have to do the same for my wife so it will be MUCH cheaper than 2 road bikes.

Will get some extra mud to decorate the bike before hand

@Alouette3, have you tried the 1.6 as well? 1.3 sounds rather small

I would also like to put road tyres on my mtb. What will I need to buy? I dont have the tyres or spare rims. I will have to buy brakes also right?

Why would you need brakes?

You need a cutthroat shaver: just shave all the knobblies off :)

Seriously: all you need are other tyres. Just like you can size up 2.0 to 2.2 to 2.5 for rougher MTB, you can size down for road.

My thinking for the 94.7 was this: the knobblies on my mtb would need replacing towards November. So, just gonna ride them nice and smooth. And replace after 94.7

The plan is also to do the majority of my training on the trails etc and then hit the road for the fun ride. As per Rouxtjie's post: I am going to "decorate" it with dust and mud from a light ride the day before, just clean my drive train afterwards, taking care not to wash any mud of the bike!! To score extra points, I'm going to ride in my baggies too. \

I must admit that road tyres/ slicks would have been nice, but due to tubeless setup that would be a bit of an expensive exercise. Knobblies gives you the added benefit of passing the road bikes on the dirt as well
