I left them after years, got tired of their rules (kind of understand them as many people abuse the system for new bikes). Just be careful I asked about many cases. So if your at a race, park your bike against a post, run into the porta toilet come out and your bike is gone, they won't pay out. Now we all know we that is a real senario. I asked many questions of thier rules. Basically on this rule you have to have it locked to something at ALL times when unattended. I am not trying to screw an insurance company over with false claims but i also want to live in the real world and we can't chain our bikes 24/7 especially at races. Would mean you carry a chain with you all the time. Oh and it has to be min 12mm gauge cable with SABS lock.

So who did you move to? All insurance companies that I've investigated have it in their fine print that the bike needs to be locked otherwise it is not covered for theft.

So, would be interested to know which companies don't have this as a specification.

I don't have a problem with that rule. Surely if they don't have anyone can just chuck their bike and claim insurance?

I went with i cycle. Also sent them photo's of my 6mm 3m long steel cable i use to loop through the 2 bikes and attached to the rear bin of my bakkie and they are happy with that. The 12mm did not fit through the eyelet on the bin so one had to get extra padlocks to lock it to the cable and eyelet was a huge mission. If they are going to steal a bike if it is 6mm or 12mm you need a hacksaw or bolt cutters but none will stop them in that case.

Virgin Money South Africa #fail. Sold my car last week. Without a vehicle or household insurance on the policy, I am unable to insure my mountain bike. seriously...?

Me: "But my bike is a vehicle".

Virgin: "No, it's not".

me: "Yes it is".

Virgin: "No it's not".

Me: "ok". (hangs up)

You learn something new every day. A bicycle is not a vehicle. Don't believe the dictionary.

bi·cy·cle

/ˈbīsikəl/

Noun

A vehicle composed of two wheels held in a frame one behind the other, propelled by pedals and steered with handlebars attached to the...

I wonder if Virgin realises that there's probably a fair percentage of their clients that own bicycles worth more than the cars and motorbikes they cover.

I have scanned my MiWay policy doc twice now and can find nothing which states I need to have my bike locked up with a specific thickness lock when unattended.

I will enquire this. However when speaking to the consultant (not sure how much claim knowledge they have) they confirmed that if the bike was on the back of my car, no locks discussed, and somebody steals it at a robot. I am apparently covered etc.

Cyclesure is the company that has it specified.

Ran into an obstacle. I have the Buzzrack beetle, that attaches to your vehicle with straps. Insurance requires this to be secured to your car to be able to claim, how on earth would you secure this?

I think by secure they need to know that it cant be removed without opening the car boot etc.

I use a Thule fixed arm mount on my hatchback. Never remove the thing, and you cannot remove it without opening the boot. however its easy to remove a bike from the rack if its not locked to the rack.

Currently waiting on a claim to be settled from I cycle. Haven't been the most proficient people to deal with, and admittedly a few dodgy things happening. But waiting for finalisation before I need to rant. Holding thumbs!

What sort of claim are you having to put in?
