I've got my bike as a specified item on my Santam policy. Covered for everything mentioned so far (transport, garage, races, on-car damage etc). It does have to be locked if unattened - but I've yet to see a policy that says it doesn't.

Have had one claim when the derailuer was damaged on a flight - claimed and payed in within 2 days.

What are the premiums like

Cycle sure all risk cover:

Specific Exceptions of the All Risks Section of the policy:

5. With regards to theft, loss or damage to unattended property

6. With regards to theft, loss or damage to property in transit.

7. With regards to theft of wheels.

8. With regards to theft from any place to which the public has access.

Specific Conditions of the All Risks Section of the policy:

3. With regards to Pairs and Sets.

4. With regards to theft from the Insured’s premises.

Think it is around R100 for a R20k bike. Probably a little more expensive than bicycle specific insurance? But I prefer having a single point of contact for if/when something goes wrong. (If the house is broken into the last thing I want to be doing is going to 2 or 3 different insurance copmpanies to try get my money).

Maybe that's a risk having all my eggs in one basket - but I havn't had a reason to change it to date.

I am with I-cycle. Have done one claim and went well.

You insure with this company at your own risk.A straight forward accident damage claim took 2 months to settle. A case of penny wise pound foolish. I cannot recommend them at all.

On point 6 reference is being made to the fact that the bike must be locked to a bike rack while in transit or theft out of your car must be accompanied by violent and forcible entry/At least they have brought the conditions to your attention.

Yes, have had a couple of claims. My two sons and myself did league racing and we had our fair share of tumbles. I just keep them up to date with all changes and upgrades. I can honestly say that every claim was handled swiftly and to my satisfaction.

Have you had to claim before?

Sjoe!!

After my bikes got stolen, Outsurance increased my premiums on 2 x 20k bikes to R684.00 per month. That is after I increased security on all entrances and got an alarm with armed response that cost me R285.00 per month. Mmmmmm ....Maybe it is time to shop around.

What is the best cycling insurance? I can add my bikes to my home + contents policy, but then they won't be covered when in transit or during competitions. I would really like them to be covered whenever.. I have contacted cyclesure, and they seem to be quite good. Anyone else I should consider?

Probably the best would be to place the bike under a All Risks Section of a policy supported with household contents cover and motor for example. You must however make certain that the All Risks Section provides cover while in use and participating in races. The downside is that should you be a high profile rider participating in many races the chances are that you will experience an accident on more than one occasion in which case this will impact negatively on your claims loss ratio and premium increase could occur on the entire policy.

It is therefore better to place the bike on a specialist type policy with a company that do bicycle cover on its own, such as Cyclesure. The said policy does have certain restrictions but should you familiarise yourself with these you will exercise more care when transporting the bike for example.

The service of Cyclesure from a claims point of view is unmatched, they are brilliant. They know bikes,it is after all what they specialise in.

I left them after years, got tired of their rules (kind of understand them as many people abuse the system for new bikes). Just be careful I asked about many cases. So if your at a race, park your bike against a post, run into the porta toilet come out and your bike is gone, they won't pay out. Now we all know we that is a real senario. I asked many questions of thier rules. Basically on this rule you have to have it locked to something at ALL times when unattended. I am not trying to screw an insurance company over with false claims but i also want to live in the real world and we can't chain our bikes 24/7 especially at races. Would mean you carry a chain with you all the time. Oh and it has to be min 12mm gauge cable with SABS lock.

Hi you are not fully familiar with the policy conditions.Where security is provided by the organisers of an event such as the Argus or multi stage races(referring to bike parks) the bike does not have to be chained. You are however correct about going to the toilet before a race.On the other hand if you had no insurance cover on the bike you would be more vigilant when leaving the bike and would ask someone to look after it while you go to the toilet. It does not mean that as it is insured you no longer have to be safety conscious.
