There was on one of the many threads like this some mention of how a venue's insurance can be voided if just one person is riding without a helmet. Maybe one of the hub's legal eagles can tell us more about this.

I am currently recovering from a fall off my mountain bike during a little evening ride with my kids. I apparently hit the tar (yes I know...what was I doing on the black stuff !!!) at around 40km/h, head first.......I would probably not be responding to this thread if I was not wearing a decent helmet.

I am still amazed at how blase people are about riding without helmets, when the risk is so great.....what are they trying to prove ???

I occasionally roll around my hood without a lid.

If someone chirped at me, it won't change my mind or affect future behavior. A personal choice it is.

If it's a rule at a course or route then there must be clear consequences spelt out and enforced - otherwise it is a 'dead' rule.

Any of you in the 40 year old bracket would have grown up and been the first to own and ride BMX's. Helmets were not even thought of let alone a must have. As kids we made the most crazy jumps and drop offs in Delta park (now known as the Spruit) and crashed a load of times. Still having the multiple scars to prove it.

Now as a parent and rider I wont get on any bike without a correctly fitting helmet.

how many people do you see with the helmet on the back of there head with their forehead open to any impact? Or even better with the helmet on backwards!

Helmets are only good if they fit correctly and stay in place on impact.

If I ride along the Spruit sometime without a lid and someone yells 'HELMET' at me I'm yelling 'ANTEATER' back.

Ok i'll ask the question

What does that mean / imply? "I'm yelling 'ANTEATER' back"

It's implying that they're asking a question. Helmet or anteater… circumcised or uncircumcised.

Helmets are over rated.

so are seat-belts in cars for kids ne?

A helmet on a bike for an adult riding casually in a park does not equate to a seatbelt for a child in a car on a road. Stop using this analogy, it's pointless.

It does. An adult without a helmet riding casually in lets say Emmarentia, a dog comes running without a leash, as they usually do, hits the adult, adult goes down, hits head against the tar, breaks neck and a concussion.

An adult drive his car casually in a quiet suburb, with a kid not buckled down in the back/front seat...a dog runs in front of the car, adult brakes, kid hits dashboard, breaks neck.

Please tell me how this analogy is so pointless as you say?

Accidents happen when you least expect them, because, you don't expect them, that's the whole argument.

In a race, a downhill, a slow ride in a park, accidents happen.

The logical conclusion of your analogy then is that children in cars should have to wear safety helmets. Your argument isn't doing your point any good. You're talking about different vehicles, different speeds, different surfaces, different uses, different age groups. There is actually nothing in common between the two. Your argument is basically that children benefit from safety devices in cars therefore cyclists should wear helmets?
