I haven't done a race event yet as I'm still a newb, so I have a few questions I hope you guys can help with.

I'm doing my first race event - the one in march where we ride through the western cape :-) Do you think Die Burger is a good practice run, maybe trying the 44km or rather the 97km. The furthest I've gone is 55kms so far.

Also, I know there will be no road closures, but will there be next to the road support?

P.S. I will be doing it on a mtb with slicks.

This is an ideal practice ride for the Argus. The 97 isn't particularly difficult, so give it a bash. You still have more than a month to get some good training in. Just finishing it within the cutoff time will give you a better seeding for the Argus than you would have had. There are a few waterpoints along the way, but I'm not sure about what technical support there is.

Last year I did it on a MTB with slicks and that's when I realised I needed a road bike because I kept running out of gears on the downhills.

Entered.

Pity they dropped the Afrikaans website, always liked how this was the one big race where you can enter & get emails in Afrikaans.

Are you rolling on a road bike too these days?

Yes, found road races on mtb's to be extremely frustrating once the novelty worn off so got a road bike end of last year.

Find myself spending a lot more time on the dunwiele than I initially anticipated..

It's also good for your MTBing.

The tempo work.

Nice.

Thanks a lot, that gives me a lot of insight into what I am going to do.

Are there any other beginners on here keen to ride in a group in this event?

You have to finish within double the time of the winner to get a seeding. So if the winner do a 2.30, you have to do it in 5 hours or you will be seeded in the open groups.7 Edited by Breezer

I think he might be referring to the other big race in March, one less often associated with beginner cyclists :whistling:

I am already in a group for the Argus as I am riding for WWF

I was refering to Die Burger ;)

My bad. I would suggest doing a shorter distance on one of the local PPA races to give you a gentler introduction & an idea what to expect in Dec. Would also give you a better seeding for the Burger which always helps!
