This must be an incredible race with sensational views. I'd love to do it one day!

It is, going up Old Helshoogte, inbetween the tall trees with all the switchbacks, going down past Pniel, cycling towards Franschoek with those magnificent Mountains infront of you, going past Paarl, Wellington, etc. It is one stunning route and race.

Road closures?! Not with that route...

The entire Paarl will only have one route out - and that is through town to the N1. Wellington will be rather screwed and will have to take back roads to get out of town. Franschoek will be completely cut off except for the looooong way around.

Really don't think that's gonna fly...

Agree with Seabee, there are no road closures. This race is the "keep left and dodge the oncoming traffic" type.

Never had issues with no road closures for races. 9/10 its an over zealous guy in the group trying to get a pb that causes an accident rather than traffic.

Look how many accidents happen at the Argus and they have full road closure and most accidents happen when there are 2-3 lanes available.

Also no road closure means its easier to drop wheel suckers in a cross wind as there is only half as much tarmac to spread out across on :0

The road between Paarl and Wellington has 2 lanes both ways, surely a plan can be made? Don't see Franchoek being worse off than Simonstown or Kommetjie on an Argus morning. Even if they just close the R44 for the Sunday morning if they get the numbers.

But I agree with your last sentence, don't see it happening - just would have been great if the organisers were a bit more ambitious, its such a stunning route (for the most part).

If the south easter is blowing we're at times in the right hand side yellow lane coming back around the R44 past Windmeul in the echelon.

Great race and route.

Agree, there are more accidents at the Argus than Burger. I cringe when I see okes taking on the oncoming traffic in the big groups at the Burger. Hope the groups aren't too big.

Two years ago the bunch I was in forced a few trucks into the yellow lane (oncoming) with the echelon fanning all over the R44.

It was rof. The wind. And the risk taken by desperate dudes in lycra trying not to lose the bunch.

Marshalling was absent.

So if I follow your reasoning Argus organisers should open the roads for normal traffic to reduce accidents :whistling:

Less to do with road closure and more to do with peoples attitudes.

Agreed - not that people's attitudes are much better at the Burger. Last year was so crappy I decided to simply drop out of my group quite early and toodle on on my own in the hope to at least see the finish in one piece. People took crazy chances - and for what?! One group better seeding (maybe!) in the Peninsula jol?!

This year caught me off-gaurd. All entries gone. Last year there were entries available still in the last week. But alas. Anyway, my front wheel has 2 broken spokes now anyway, which last time took a month to get fixed.
