Hope Pro Evo 2 Bearing Failure

I'm actually terrified of posting this, but has anyone been disappointed with their Hope Pro 2 Evo hubs?

I've done 2500 km in 4 months, mostly offroad but we don’t do wild stuff like down rivers or underwater anything. Just normal MTB… that’s what we do!

I wash my bike once a week after my Saturday long ride. No, I don’t use a pressure cleaner - ever. No, I never use Clean Green or Repsol or even Sunlight; I use a mild auto wash & wax. Or even just the hose spray if there’s no mud…

Now 4 months later, all 5 original bearings in the rear hub are toast; 3 in the freebody and 2 in the axle. I thought perhaps I had a flawed unit, so I hit Google and now see there are numerous similar complaints, particularly from the UK. So much for Hope’s special stainless steel bearings….

I really thought converting from Mavic SLR’s (huge maintenance…) to Hope Pro 2 Evo’s was going to be one of my life's most meaningful step changes! Hope’s have such a huge reputation. What can have gone wrong? Is it me, have I got a ‘made-on-Monday’ unit, how is this possible for Hopes? Anyone care to comment?

I actually went and bought a complete bearing set front and rear before Pioneer.

Cost me about R 400.00

Just replace them and keep going - sometimes bearings last and some time they dont.

Just replace them and keep going.

Really strange, I have 2sets of hope hubbed wheels.

The one set for 3years, and NO issues, not even a hickup.

The second set, used SS for 1,5 years now, and also not a single headache.

Just maybe some bad luck rolling your way.

Watch out, lady luck targets you and she even rolls on bearings :whistling: .

Hope you get is sorted soon

Hope changed from steel bearings to stainless steel, which can't be hardened to the same level as ordinary steel.

SO you get bearings that don't rust, but they're alot like cheese!

i dont suppose you have nice quality images of aforementioned toasted bearings? Would be interesting to see the toasting you speak of.

My Hope hubs been running on their factory bearings for 5yrs still purring along.

When you mean they toasted , what does that imply, lots of side to side movement, ie wheel wobbly or they just really rough not rolling properly?

The hope hubs are so well sealed that normal use wont get them contaminated with water or dirt , all I can think of is they put insufficient grease in your hubs bearings , just bad luck or somehow water got forced in there - maybe on a bike carrier driving through the rain at 120km.....

Not to hard to replace the bearings and they are standard sizes so bearing shops sell them cheap :)

I am very surprised by this, my hope hubs have been through some of the worst riding and conditions imaginable, still as good as new after a year that's not to say is impossible though, as you say maybe just a Monday set of bearings.

Replace and ride again is what I say.

Possibly a bad batch?

I've had a set of Pro2's for years and still have the original bearings. My Pro2 Evo's I've had for almost 2 years and again, still original bearings

My pro2's arent even the evo's and they belonged to someone else before me and rode them silly and they haven't given a minutes issue!! I reckon bad batch of bearings, change and carry on....

You not alone , some people get great happy miles from them and some dont . Me im not happy with mine , replaced bearings a few times and still same issue ( stiff feel , and short lifespan ) . they are now my training/spare mess around wheels , replaced them a while back .

By 'toast' I mean that all 5 original bearings were as rough as hell, with no suggestion of grease inside whatsoever. I replaced them with Enduro bearings, let's see how long these last compared with stainless steeel originals.

Agree that changing said bearings is a piece of cake, but that's not the point. I thought that Hope hubs were bomb-proof? From the responses above and on Google, seems like there's a 50/50 love/hate feeling about Hope. Well, I guess that's MTB...the only guarantee is something will let you down, get over it.

I've been riding Hope hubs for years, the only reason I keep getting new ones is because my bike keeps getting stolen.

The only hubs I've had a problem with have been the Pro 2 Evo's. And that's because the bearings are stainless steel.

Get decent bearing from bearing man, replace and Richard's your fathers brother.
