I'll take the 36 from you...

your offer is very tempting. I merely went with 36T cause so many started out with 30-34 & are now switching to 36T. I also paid R900 for mine.post-3951-0-70887400-1388139878_thumb.jpg

Anyone have a 2nd hand 32T 104BCD to sell??

I rode my 36t on Suikerbossie & Chappies on Thursday & was doing quite well even a few PR's on Strava. Did Contermanskloof Blue Route Yesterday & was also ok but not too sure about Attakwas with a 36T.

so i went with 36T up front first time 1x10 (still needs to be fitted) & i'm having second thoughts, maybe should've started out with a 30 or 32 first

Just a few comments on what I have experienced. I ride a 29HT with a 1x10 conversion with an 11/36 cassette.I first tried a 32T front for about 6 weeks and found some longer steeper climbs a bit hard on the legs as the 32/36 was just not enough.

I then tried a 30T on the front and that is a super size chainring for a 1x10 29er. I am able to climb steeper hills easier and quicker than with the 32. On the flats I have no problem keeping up with other 29ers with 2x10 drivetrains. Yes I have to keep a high cadence but easily manage to stay with on 40km/h + speeds. you also learn to be a good drafter.

My riding partner is about the same as me on strength and endurance and rides a Trek Superfly carbon full suspension 29er. So we ride similar times over similar distances and that was when I ran a 2x10 on the HT. with the 1x10 30T he is the one trying to keep up. Whether it be on flats or climbs. Also what I have experienced is that the gearing forces me to ride at a high cadence. So I am not grinding through big gears and expending my legs. Overall my times are quicker and I am less expended.

Now just waiting for that 42T cog to arrive to give me 11/42 on the back.

38 Rotor blade up front and 11/36 at the back on my HT 29er.

pictures??...please, I'm finding this hard to belief or maybe just need convincing that the 36T will be fine.

I forgot to add that my times over the marathon distance are more or less the same as when I rode with the 2x10 drivetrain.

It is important to have a variation of rings at least a 30 and 32 in my case. An upcoming race profile will determine what ring on front. Example. MTN Sabie with a lot of climbing will definitely be a 30 up front. MTN Clarens has a lot of gravel road riding at speed so there the 32 will be needed.

I believe those options will give you a better all round set up.

Amazing that this thread popped up today...I was just busy thinking I want to go 1X10 on my new MTB build by couldn't decide what chainring i wanted to go. Thinking 32 is the safest option initially.

Looks like the supplier doesn't have any 32T's so I'm stuck with 36T for the Attakwas. I also just read the thread again & see some guys are running 38's up front so I'm thinking there is hope for me.

If you going with 36T then i suggest 11 speed setup :)

Gotta have strong legs to do serious climbing with a 36T,or maybe at 45 i'm over the hill so to say?

How fast do you really wanna go downhill?

Cause it don't help going up!

10 gears is a whole lotta gears, and I mean a lot.
