hahaha, just poking because I can, we actually gain from it letting certain members rest for World champs now and having nearly free reign of team choice for the last race...

On another note, I have entered Itera in Scotland with 3 friends for next year super stoked to be racing over seas again and the sleep monsters on Loch Ness are going to be epic!!!

I looked at this as well but then was told I would be single.....

Not going to lie Rodrigues was going to be an easier sell to the mrs, but I am too saddistic to turn down a real suffer fest in the warm dry Scotland

+1, seeing my team heading over is going to make work during the race a serious drag.

Thankfully in the GIS industry a map on my work screen looks like work so trackers can be eyeballed hard.

On the local front the local AR racing season is done, We ended up 3rd in one series and dropped to 4th in the other.

The Kinetic Full Moon on the weekend was tough, not so much due to the route but rather the heat and pace.

We went in leading the series purely because we were the only team to have actually completed 3 races where all the other top teams had withdrawn from at least one. We went there to try improve our points but we needed to win and have other teams finish outside the top 3 in order for us to take the series.

First 4 legs were a blur, a quick 800m run to the boats(3:28min/km pace) and we were first on the water. Ridiculously paced 4km paddle(didn't know fluids moved that fast) then a sub sub 6min/km 8 km run put the top 4 teams about 15mins ahead and a lot further into the hurt zone than hoped. Nevarest squeezed a gap on the run, with us and Jabberwock neck and neck and Cyanosis a little way back. The next 7km paddle was also high paced, Cyanosis showed they actually paddle and blew past and into the lead on the 2nd paddle and we were all happy for a rest while each team had a member do the 500m SUP leg.

The real race started on the cycle which is where the heat and climbing and pace took it's toll. 61km, 900m elevation gain and navigation that your average primary school kid could manage.

Our team struggled here, I was already dehydrated from going too hard too early and we settled into 4th place, by now we had a big gap on the rest of the field... Couple of chunders and many thoughts of dam how the eff is the chick in the team so strong, she was idling away the whole cycle and if it wasn't 32dec C she wouldn't have broken a sweat.

We had a solid transition and then got going on the last hike, a bit more challenging nav and a lot more hills we managed to sneak into 3rd just before the last check point as other teams were also battling with badly dehydrated members.

Top 4 teams all had at least 1 team member chundering and dehydrated and the sun setting was a welcome event for once.

I think the short distance AR in SA has taken a massive turn for the better, pace that could win a 120km race 2 years ago won't even have you in the top 4 anymore.

That being said this is a sport for everyone and if you can hike well and cycle you have no excuse not to try it out, you will find out a lot more about yourself...

Now time to watch the World champs and go back to base training in preparation for Itera Scotland and all the local races next year...

kiff report, so it was sickness not nav that got you into 3rd?

I did the Eden Challenge with Grant moons ago - I think it was his first proper AR :)

The bum blisters he endured - he even allowed us to take a photo of them they were SO bad  :whistling:

What and adventure and experience!

Both snuck us passed to be honest. Basically they went slightly off course as we passed but in truth their chickety was effed and we would have caught them in the next 2km anyway...

So with the route released for the AR world Champs starting Tomorrow. I think there are a few people very very nervous and others of us a bit less fomo'ed. 107km and over 7000m elevation gain and that is just the warm up hike first leg

We have 6 teams in this race, the most ever i think - all kicks off tomorrow morning 6am SA time.

And Sanlam Painted Wolf are serious contenders with a 4th two years ago.

I really hope we can get some local interest going for the next week, this is an amazing sport and even the 'backmarkers' are hardcore.

Whilst you always kind of knew that a 450km course on a small volcanic island would include some rof terrain, it's still a little bit alarming to see it once it's released!

amongst a lot of interesting ones, a predicted speed of 7km/h for the leading teams on mtb1 gets my eyebrows raised....

nice course preview

what is the Prologue section? for seeding?

Ya they wanted them split so they starting at 30second intervals, stops teams just following other teams in the first few hours, forces them to actually navigate from the start
