Interesting. And no offence, i dont agree with u..Im not a South African but i like cycling in cape town. When i said 'hello, good morning even I said happy new year' most of people replied to me;;;;

When I lead them, they said to me 'thank u'.

Just got back from CT and did not find the same, I found that I was greeted back, and yes I was mostly the one doing the greeting, but I am OK with that. I did see too may riders riding abreast and not caring about the cars. i did both MTB and road rides, and must say that i have a new respect for all the MTB'ers that tackle Tokai on a regular basis.I found all who I encountered on this ride friendly, even when out of breath and pumping hard.I look forward to riding there again soon.

Sometimes I get into 'the zone' and don't notice much around me, might even have missed a few greetings myself, but always try greet / respond.

Don't know if this zone thing happens to anyone else, its like a state of trance, and you don't actually remember that stretch of pedalling.

It often happens to me while I'm checking Facebook on my phone as I'm riding. I sometimes look up and think 'how did I get through all those traffic lights and why are all these people hooting and showing me rude signs...?' Flipping Cape Town roadies, stay the eff out of JHB...! (Though we don't really know when you're up here or really care where u came from anyway coz we're too busy floating the country's economy to worry about u "invading" our city).

My wife got the finger when she hooted at 3 roadies riding abreast in Hout Bay over a blind rise. They were then overtaken by a taxi on the blind rise. If someone had been coming on the opposing side...3 less stupid people on the roads.

After a long holiday in Cape Town and its surroundings, I can only say that I'm very ashamed to be called a cyclist when riding there! I have always been friendly to those that share my passion for sport, whether it be swimming, walking your dog, cycling or running. I am also one that greets my fellow cyclists and runners as this is not only friendly, but also creates a great atmosphere under each other. All I can say is that I'm shocked! Cape town has these great cycling friendly roads like no other city in SA and every cyclist I greeted gave me a bad look and just went on further. This not only happened once or twice, but more than 50 times during my 4 week stay in the Cape. I asked a fellow hubber Dealer01 when I collected my cassette from him and he says this has been going on for quite a while. How can one blame road rage against cyclists if they ride two or even 3 abreast, can't greet back or say thanks to vehicles that go out of their way to ride around these riders that ride next to each other? They have absolutely no respect for other cyclists or cars on the road for that matter. I am truely ashamed

Here we go again, lets stereotype the best way us humans know how to.To the box (in afrikaans) that started this thread, well done pallie!!! Why dont you start boycotting the Argus by getting all your kronies that agreed with what you said to stay away in March as well? That way you can not only contribute to a sicker society that tends to judge people inappropriately but also not contribute to a South African economy that really needs it!!! :thumbdown:

Sounds like we must build the great wall of cape town, we wont mind keeping to ourselves :D while we're at it, add something about how we suffer while you northerners drive incredibly slow while admiring the magnificence the western cape has to offer... especially if a whale dare poke its head out. Cars with GP number plates will stop in its tracks with no warning... and not one but throngs of them, halting all traffic behind it.

I love South Africa, great for stereo typing, haha

I must apologise as it seems that my tongue should've got stuck in my spokes before it ran away with me. :blush: In my holiday spirit and being taken in with the beauty of the Cape, my joy of cycling on your mostly cycling friendly roads had me feeling that locals would be as friendly as everything they as cyclists have been blessed with. Us Northies are normally stuck on either a narrow country road or have to cope with traffic. Maybe our greetings are not just friendliness, but a 'struggle' acknowledgement.

From your comments I realise that I but covered a minute part of the Cape Town cycling world and really wish I had more time to cycle in all the areas you mentioned. But my grindstone up North is calling .....Sorry for the feathers I raffled, but .....we should stop and consider what we REALLY do out on the road. Let our enjoyment of what we do always show, whether it be to a fellow roadie, mountie or motorist - Then only will they say : We also want THAT ! because if we always go around like martyrs ....not nice!!!!

If i don't greet it's cause i'm kakkking off on the hills. :devil:

There is definately a better ethics within the MTB community in KZN i feel?

Guys, last time I took note we are all on the same side of the fence - let's forget the MTB/Roadie , not greeting issues and just ride !

I have been in CT since 2007 and also intially had issues with this greeting thing - but now I just greet and ride and enjoy CT

So if I get a return greet >>> great , if I don't >>> so what !

And this goes for all cyclists , runners dog walkers joggers of longboarders ! :rolleyes:
