Nutritional Supplementation - What are we really paying for?

Recommended Posts

@Agteros just add lemon juice

Nothing wrong with GAME. Been using it for some time but there's definitely a difference between Game and 32Gi.

I can easily do a 2.5hr ride on water (did it this morning).

Serious question

I hit the wall HARD on 32GI, on clean/flavoured water I just run out of energy.

Game keeps me going, but I tend to drink too much (must be chasing the sugar) and I tend to spit a bit after taking a sip of Game

Game has more sodium (315mg vs. 172mg) (per 100g) as 32GI Endure.

Game has less potassium (65mg vs. 148mg) (per 100g) as 32GI Endure.

The energy and carbs is the same in both.

I dont know which is better based on this.

Had the same experience with 32GI.....lekker lekker lekker....nothing

With plain water I can feel the energy drop slowly but surely after 3 hours...anything leading up to that nothing.

Now I have also used hammer and epic pro....they keep me going for 5 hours plus....but so does game.

I find more value in recovery shakes....not from a nutrition point of view but from a convenience point of view....I have all the time in the world to mix my ride drinks....but eating straight after a big ride I battle with sometimes, thus a recovery shake is easy, quick and can be consumed straight after you are off the bike.

Is the blue pill an anti-depressant now as well? ;)

As per the joke that modern men are on Viagra, modern women on anti-depressants and modern kids on Ritalin...

Happy family YEAH!

I struggle with two things:

  1. Taste of neat water

  2. Electrolytes

So I need to doctor water a bit to break the taste :D

I drop half a Hammer Electrolyte pill into my plain water bottle to change the taste a bit and I hope it does the electrolyte thing as well.

I works fine up to a 2.5 hr ride for me.

Serious question

I find that 32Gi gives me more energy during the day.

If I do a hard 120km ride on a Saturday and use Game then I'm normally buggered in the afternoon and will take a nap but if I use 32Gi I'll be fine in the afternoon and easily make it through the night.

I normally race on 32Gi. Last year's 94.7 I used 32Gi as normal and figured that I'd need a bap in the afternoon but I was fine, no nap required.

I know that 32Gi only works for some people, luckily I'm one of those people.

Ahhh ok

To honest, apparently you need to follow a low gi diet, for 32GI to work.....which is not going to happen. Its just too much admin for me.

I might just stick to game from now on also since I am getting the same results. Will still have a recovery shake every now and again after a big ride.

Lets say I want to go ride e.g. 100km.

I want to buy all the correct ingredients to mix my own drinks:

  • what ingredients should I buy?
  • the ratio mixed in say a 750ml bottle of H2O?
  • I presume these ingredients will be easily available?

Edit: I also read somewhere recovery drinks after rides within 1 hour is very important, what will be a good mixture for this?

Some interesting reflection here,

one of the best drinks is honey, fruit juice and water. (lemon juice or grapefruit)

best recovery chocolate milkshake and steak with chill sauce.

It is possible to be competitive on water during training.

PVM (Energy dynamics) has a strong base as it was a spin off from SADF rat packs.

the other supplement was a maize based powder that was developed by the mines, but that is now no longer available.

funny thing....hammer's perpetuam reminds me exactly of that....maizy after taste.

It's also got the most Kj of all the drinks I have used...so you could get lekker dik if you smash a bottle when you are just going around the block

I have just made up a liter of concentrated lemon juice. Used around 10 lemons, squeeze the juice out, use a grater to remove some of the skin, chuck everything (including squeezed lemons) in a pot and gently boiled it all up with a liter of water and honey to taste. Let it cool and then strain it. We also make ice tea with rooibos and some lemon as well.

I dont use it on my rides but I enjoy a big glass of it (watered down to taste!) with ice and mint after a ride or with supper.

I used to enjoy coke till I read that its something like 10 spoons of sugar per tin or something mental like that!
