Lets say I want to go ride e.g. 100km.

I want to buy all the correct ingredients to mix my own drinks:

  • what ingredients should I buy?
  • the ratio mixed in say a 750ml bottle of H2O?
  • I presume these ingredients will be easily available?

Edit: I also read somewhere recovery drinks after rides within 1 hour is very important, what will be a good mixture for this?

Still use Jeukendrup recipe for long rides (maltodextrin, sucrose and salt) and water for shorter rides.

For extra long rides also get some food and maybe apple juice.

End of ride - milkshake and eat soon as possible

Off the point - how many have tried the high fat low carb diet and have successfully got their body to burn fat instead of carbs?

Well, I take exception.

When I was a kid, I was allergic to a lot of things. I was sent from doc to specialist till the cows came home.

My dad sent me to a homoeopath. I went, the guy did his thing, and six months worth of bi monthly injections in my back, I am now nearly twenty years down the line, to experience any of the symptoms that led me there in the first place.

inhform yourself bud

My daughter was born with an allergic reaction to rice. Google that ****. Less that 1% of people ever in the history of people have ever had that.

Docs said nothing.

Took her to homoeopath when she was around 18 months old. Gave course of "meds/supplements" and since then she eats rice no problem.

Psychosomatic my bum.

I have also used the Jeukendrup mix till 2 months ago. Instead of salt I used a fizz tablet from hammer. Then I discovered cadence nutrition carbo fuel energy. It also consists of the Jeukendrup ratio formula, has all the salts and tastes great and is extremely cheap

Still make my own gel though

Some interesting reflection here,

one of the best drinks is honey, fruit juice and water. (lemon juice or grapefruit)

best recovery chocolate milkshake and steak with chill sauce.

I'm still looking for a good answer as to why chocolate milkshake is such a good recovery drink?

Thanks, Sort of what thought, I think for any recreational rider its going to be a good recovery drink and work out allot cheaper than any expensive supplement

Are recovery drinks really important for us hackers unless one is doing a stage race or maybe doing 2 races on a weekend? I understand for Pro's and serious age group racers that are doing hard training sessions with intervals and stuff but is it just an excuse to pig out on Steri's (not that I am saying that's an issue of course ;) )

Sure but the bugger with recovery drinks / shakes are convenience....and also the reason I still mix one every now and again.

Let's take a stage race as an example...because its in powder form, you can have you recovery shake premixed in the shaker, ready to consume as you roll over the line, you just need some water and you are sorted(getting those things into your body asap is important). Lots of guys will say, well just go to the tent and eating something...The issue is that it takes me about 30min to build up an appetite after a ride so drinking something is much easier than eating something. So it makes it easier to get the stuff into your stomach as quickly as possible, I am prepared to pay for that.

My stage racing recovery sequence is as follows and works for me

1. Roll over line....get box / bag and go to tent and consume recovery shake asap..before you do anything

2. Go shower and clean myself while showers are not as busy yet.

3. Go and eat some food...have 2 flavoured milks while eating...

4. Go give the bike a quick wash

5. Praat kuk, chill with tjommies, have a nap....

6. Go lube bike and make sure its ready for the next day just before dinner

7. Go have dinner

8. Drink a rennie...go to bed

Wash rinse repeat for x days

That's exactly how evidence-based medicine works. Take one isolated example where a treatment "supposedly" helped you and blanket it across all homeopathic remedies. It has been consistently shown to be no better than placebo. And honestly, the concept is so whack. Diluting something makes it stronger, curing like with like. Madness.

I have changed to Game on my rides, used to use expensive USN Epic pro, cant see the difference.

Game costs R60 for a tub and tastes amazing (naaaaartjie) you get a lot more bottles from it.

epic pro is like R400 or something crazy, doesn't taste that nice and you get very few bottles from a tub.

For IM training I am going to switch to GU, just because that is what we are going to get on the course and want to get used to it..

I think we are getting ripped off..

I pay for the convenience of use.

After intense training, I can't eat properly for at least a few hours.

Having a recovery drink / supplement bridges the nutrition gap until I raid the fridge later on.
