Yawning when riding

Recommended Posts

I have done a search but to no avail.

My question is, yawning when riding, especially when stopped. Is this "normal" and am I doing anything wrong?

It does not matter what distance, time of day or intensity.

Jeez, am I going to sleep on my bike!

Haha. Im sorry but that is funny. Uawning is in part a compensatory mechanism for increased CO2 due to decreased resporatory rate and decrease activity of the RAS in your brain (hence yawning in the evenings).

It might be that you are just a shallow breather and that your yawn 'reflex' is quick to respond.

Might thus be normal.

(Disclaimer: if yawning is excessive it might be a harbinger of pathology in the brain, though unlikely)

I think it could be due to lack/increase of Oxygen, I often have this when I'm performing stretches where I'm doing deep inhales & exhales.

Are you on a road bike...?

It happens on on all my bikes. Now that you mention it, mostly on my road bike in traffic? Nervous, shallow breathing?

I am recovering from a serious injury and cannot afford to come off again.

I am not tire but it P.....es me off on the bike.

Go watch the start of any big race, 90 percent of the competitors will be yawning before the start. Its quite common. That's usually from nerves and your brain telling your body you need more oxygen, I guess for whats to come. The other comment about the increase in CO2 could also apply for you. When you stop riding perhaps its your bodies way of clearing it out.

Riding dirt road causes this, if I ride Breedts Nek it happens to me.

Find a more technical ride on a MTB
