Magalies Monster 2014

Dirt De Vil

I think Hakahana is a better bet given the tech requirements of the monster. I haven't ridden Avianto.

Sure was just talking about 4ways area...

You can also go and do Klapperkop . Stick to the dirt and you will get your technical climbing as well as a good workout on the downhill on the Golf Estate side .

I did klapperkop as I stay next to it. The climb to the lower radio tower on the back of the trail is harsh but manageable. The golf club side is nice but I can see has potential to cut some tyres. Maybe next weekend I'll do Klapperkop, Groenkloof and Voortrekker Monument in one go. After that it should be "easy rides" to save the legs for the 24th. That right only two weeks to prepare.

Yip all the way up to the towers , cross the road down the single track , jump the tar again and bomb down the trail towards the gate at the bottom of R21 . Repeat as many times as needed .

We off to Thaba tomorrow, cycling from home, a loop or 2 and then back home. All on trail bikes.

I guess that is about 9 km, to simulate the monster i'd need to almost do 9 laps. Laps create confidence and confidence causes connections with the trees. but my speed around that track is not the fastest out there so maybe confidence is what I need.

We're going to ride to the shack, do the N-S climb, back to the shack, then do the loop around Sparkling Waters and back over home, should give 82km with 1500m climbing.

So if you see a dude on a Cannondale crying next to a guy on a Merida, please don't point and laugh ;)

Did 50km at Hakahana this morning.

The new 5.5km XCO trail is great, but a tough bugger to start a ride with; especially early morning when the sun is in your eyes; not the best time to ride it.

Did purple (XCO trail), blue, black, red, rest of blue and some green at the end... Red B down into the kloof needs some cutting; lost the trail, but luckily new where to go. Johan mentioned that they will be doing some route maintenance there next week or so. Section down from top of red route is badly eroded from rain, but Johan mentioned a new single track down... Which I saw but didn't take as I knew the old route from previous times. Rest of the trails in good condition.

Overall hakahana remains a tough ride; good training for magalies monster. Will definately be going back!!

If you riding the Monster 80km you should be freaked out. I would put it on pr with Cradle Trophy 75km as a mate of mine has done Monster twice (6.5hrs and 5hrs) and he did 5hrs on Cradle this yr.

I've only ever done the 45km monster and those first climbs are PROPER.

The rest reminds me of MTN Rooiberg, there isn't much time to recoup cause even the downhills are tough.

Im off to Sani, that's like my training ride for Monster (doing 80km first time). #Gulp
