I hate those posts that says ' Hi Im a newbie and Im super excited and what is the best bike'?

And now Im doing the same...o well here goes

I want a road bike to compliment my MTB training...now I haven't really got a clue what I'm looking for - I don\t know what I'm meant to be looking for.

This is what I do know:

1. This is to replace my 100 km MTB rides..so it will be a bike for long haul riding...5/6 hour rides

2. Comfort is far more important than speed...this is not my racing bike...the mountain bike is

3. I don't mind if people snigger at my ride from a brand point of view, but I would mind if they downright burst out laughing. The snigger squad may stop sniggering after hour 4...

4. My mtb is a medium, i'm 175 'tall'

5. My fighting target weight is 79 kg...I don't think ill ever drop under this cause I love my braaivleis seconds too much

6. Thinking second hand as well

7. Thinking 10 k - 15 k budget ...if I dig it then I will splash out on a new Trek Madone

So - what must I look for?

Specific bike models that suite this description?

For plush comfort, Spez Roubaix (30 big ones)

For in-between stiffness and comfort and longevity , alu CAAD 10 (20 big ones)

What's your budget?

I did what you're doing, before Epic, get a road bike for 'cross training' to clock up those miles on. Rode the 94.7 and fast one and a few trining rides on it (a total of 5 rides max) and then sold it. MTB was/is my main focus, and I found the 2 close calls with traffic, and the lack of anything interesting, (like a sharp bend, or rocks to negotiate or a bunny hop opportunity or anything that required any skill) were reason enough to can the idea.

I reckon you're better off splashing on a set of light race wheels for your mtb, and then a set of slicks to slap on the current wheels should the need to take to the road arise.

Agree, Roubaix has a little brother, the Secteur, Alu version, comes with disc brakes, as a mtb rider myself I hate road bikes brakes. Start at about 10k.

Train heavy, race light. So, you should not be too concerned about weight but about comfort and a bit of style.

Get yourself an old school steel Merckx, Colnago, Pina or suchlike.

No one will laugh at you, being a bit heavier you will get a good workout, it will be uber comfortable and you will never need a Trek.

Old steel steed.... I have a Peugot '76 with a 49 up front and a 12 to 21 9 speed rear cassette. Time trial/strength train the hell out of your legs and do some hill intervals..... You will climb on your mtb like never before. Granny what?

I race a lot of mtb, a fair bit of road and a little bmx. Road and mtb are a very good combination. Look for a shimano 105 groupset. Try merida, scott or giant. At R15000 you will get a very decent bike. Your ZAR's will get more road bike than mtb.

Most replied with bikes that are way too expensive for those purposes.

Go for Silverback lower end

or even cheaper

Merida lower end

@OP

Also got a roadbike a while ago because well....n+1. Also tried to justify it with help me with pedal stroke, make me stronger blah blah blah...but actually I just had an itch, and it needed a scratch. To be honest I am now enjoying the crap out of road races and not doing mtb races...I still ride mtb for fun though but the standard XCM races we have, have lost a bit of its appeal for me. So will probably only do the ones I really love, have smaller fields and less hype

You forgot to add "..., and I *only* have R30k to spend"

Nuts how much newbies spend on bikes these days.

(Highjack off, I don't know much about thin-wheeled bikes lately).
