Important questions:

  • How heavy are you
  • Based on your roadie back ground and how you approach other sports, are you a go large or go home (Would/could you be the kind of rider that will ride technical single track hard or tentatively) and do you spend lots of hours in the saddle
  • Do you have a rough idea on what you would be willing to spend on a new set of wheels?

I weigh about 80 - 82kg, depending if I had breakfast.

Up until now I MTBed for fun in between all the road cycling. I can and want to definitely notch it up to do more racing. Currently I spend about 10 - 16 hours per week, mostly road.

I actually don't have a good idea of what good MTB wheelsets go for, but I was thinking of R6-7,000.

Ok, you are in a good price range to get a decent set of wheels.

80-82kg's pending breakfast, but excluding all your cycling gear would, in my opinion, put you more into the strong and light vs stupid wheel build.

  • American Classics seems to be a classic from a manufacturer built wheelset point of view.
  • Stans Arch EX rims are tough and light enough with a nice width, with good spokes (think wheelsmith, etc) and then a set of Hope Bubs for real reliability or Novatec or Superstar Hubs for something a little more affordable yet reliable. Hope and Superstar come in various colours and all three hubsets are interchangeable with respect to axels.
  • The Citec's also looks like good wheels and the hubber selling them will give you exceptional back-up service....that is just how he rolls.
  • Then there is also the WTB i23 to consider as the same build above for the Arch EX wheels.

Love it ChUkky! It's amazing how wheelsets can transform the whole look of the bike. I'm pretty comfortable with my XT/SLX mix, but if I have to, what would be the best to upgrade first?

Basically only the Rear Derailleur and Crankset are XT and the other components are SLX.

I have to say one of the best upgrades Ive done apart from the wheels is XTR shifters, that made the biggest difference to the ride of the bike, the shifts are awesome... there may be nay sayers but theres a massive difference between the SLX shifting and the XTR.

Third would be the XT M786 rear derailleur thats got the clutch.

Then other little odds and bobs Ive changed is the the F/D to the XTR M986 derailleur, KCNC Scandium bars and seatpost.

The next upgrade I will do is get XTR M986 rear derailleur when the clutch on the XT breaks again. The mechanism in the SLX and the XT is identical and rubbish, they break.

The XTR clutch mechanism is built a lot more solid in comparison and will not break where the SLX and XT does.

Other than that Im happy with the bike, it rides awesome

Oh, the 1st thing I did upgrade was my crank to a 40/28... did Joberg2c with it, no hassles

For reliability and toughness you cannot go too far wrong with ZTR Arch Ex, Hope hubs held together with DT Swiss spokes.

I replaced my Giant XTC's PCX/2 stock wheels with Arch Ex and it transformed both my bicycle and my riding. There is good info on the benefits of wheel weight reduction, angular momentum and such.

The wheels feel a lot stiffer but almost counter-intuitively with more flex and rebound. There is a feel that I can only describe as "quicker to respond". The first time I went airborne over a ramp I almost saw my A$$ as it bounced much higher than what I was used to. Now the PCX's feel slow and sluggish if I put them back on the bike.

I have now ridden about 5000km with those wheels on both my Giant and my carbon frame bike, including some real challenging stuff, and they perform like day one.

find someone selling their old Giant PXCR wheels, have hope ztr crest on hope hubs on one bike and the Giant PXCR on another, and I honestly cannot feel much of a difference between the two. (weight is almost the same)

Price I paid for the Crest's was R4500 (a while ago), and R1700 with two tyres thown in on a hub purchase.

If u cant find the PXCR's either stans/hope or american classic are good bang for buck.

Cant comment on the Novatec other than they got a good review on WMB magazing, them and the superstar hoops.

Stock Giant PXC-R wheelset is a light as a ZTR Arch EX and Hope hub combo (1750g) and as strong. Difference is you can pick up a new Giant wheelset that someone is upgrading from for maybe half of what the new ZTR's will costs you. I have both wheelsets and have run both on my 2 29ers. There is no difference I can feel. Giant's have been good for the past 5 000km including Barbeton Ultra, GR300, Epic, Sani2C, World Masters XC (to be fair I buckled one there in a crash) plus various other races and training. I'm 86kg and do not hold back on technical routes.

How much better are the P-XC2 than than the S-XC2? I have done about 9000km on my S-XC2 set now and only had two broken spokes so far. I am thinking of getting the P-XC2 if it is any better and has a better rear hub.

I have a spare P-XC2 29er wheelset I took off my Anthem If anyone is interested. Still basically new.

So you have the same steed as I do... this is 10,6kg

The wheels made a massive difference and then also the other light little odds and bobs too

Eish... 18 spoke front and 24 rear on a 29er! I have a feeling my 86kg would run into trouble racing or trail riding those....
