Yes, I noticed that too on Sunday morning  , in total contrast to the 99er the day before.

Might it be a "race" issue? People think they've paid their money and can therefore dump their rubbish wherever they feel like because someone else will clean up after them? Disgusting attitude.

The "tossers" we recovering from 99er the day before and not out on the road.

Many still have a long way to go with regards cycling etiquette ... from littering to obeying the rules of the road, and not to mention bunch riding skills.!

I think the organizers can make a bigger play on this in the pre-race info, but more especially before each start group sets off. I cant remember ever being told from the start line not to drop litter.

I've heard before but rarely so.

Not in the last few seasons though.

I agree, the organisers should make participants aware that littering outside of the demarcated areas (water points) will result in disqualification. The added awareness should see a big reduction in the number of people littering.

I think you should be allowed to switch anyone you see littering, or just jam your foot on their back wheel.

I bet they won't litter again after that.

At the 94.7 last year I saw a guy toss his punctured tube into the bush, If I wasn't dying on a tandem I would have stopped and wrapped it around his neck :whistling:

While waiting for the $ bunch to start, a rider in front of me tossed his empty gel to the floor. I tapped him asked him to pick it up. He just ignored me. Only afterwards when some other riders who also saw what happened gave him some choice words did he pick it up.

Just shows the ignorant attitude of some riders.

To me littering is amost worse than doping, had many close encounters with offenders getting agro if i take them on. On the other hand, irritation with organisers not leaving dustbins in the shoots so that one can at least not fill your pockets before the ride starts

I have switched someone who swore at me during an argument about him dropping his wrapper. Not hard enough to send him flying, just tapped his bars with my saddle to give him a scare and make him stop.

For some reason, the road on which I live is a popular route for road running races. There is a particular spot, about 4kms from my house where they like to set up a water point.

After each race, there are normally lots of those little water sachets lying in the street. Every time there is a race a group of people come past with black bags and pick up the litter.

If organisers of cycle races cannot control the littering of the cyclists, then they must start to do the same thing. Perhaps they can charge an additional fee to each entrant to cover the cost of collection. Maybe (or am I being optimistic), cyclists will stop littering if they know they are being charged for it.

I watch a lot of races on TV and you often see pros chucking their stuff on the road. Even at the TDF, you see cyclists doing it. One year they rode past a dam and at least 20 guys tossed their bottles into the dam.

I know that the Argus has a very strict clause re. cleaning up within 24 hours, and it gets checked afterwards too. Perhaps this should be a condition for approval at all races. If you leave a mess behind, you don't get to stage a race next year?
