This is going to be the same as real tragedies with cycling (where people have actually lost their lives), it will be in the news for 4 days max, massive outrage and then forgotten.

The public's attention span is not that long and the Oscar trial is just getting started. Doubt there will be any bans, sanctions, legal claims, criminal claims or any action really.

See below, your crystal ball isn't very reliable.

two of them got arrested yesterday; probably in court today

Soopa news, EXACTLY what they deserve!

I honestly think you are misreading the intent in those posts.

Thanks Marko. Like I said before: I really don't want another nasty incident. Thats the only reason I have asked that MCC advise their members to ride in neutral kit. If I wanted an incident I would have encouraged them to do the opposite and load up the GoPro with a 64gig card.

Let us for the moment accept your position as true. How does that change the legal position ?

No matter what went before, what the video shows is an assault by the cyclists on the driver.

Earlier provocation is not legal justification for vigilante action. We may not like that, but that is the legal position.

Eddy, I agree with you. I'll post this again. The level of response was not appropriate irrespective of what the provocation. The chaps who have handed themselves in to the cops need to get what is coming to them. Simple. Period. I don't for one second believe they were justified. Let the process follow its course and we'll see where it goes.

All I would like to get from this incident above what the rest of you are saying is what the whole story is and not merely the 59 seconds of mobile phone video a passer by in his car captured as the tail end. Some posters here have indicated they were present. Let them fill in the gaps without the media spin. What has been presented so far makes no sense as to the beating the driver got.

If found guilty, what should the punishment be.

I think the guilty parties should sponsor 5 needy riders, bikes , kit , race fees for the rest of the year.

My 2 cents worth.

Rather give each of them 100 hours community service and a couple of black bags so they can clean up gu packets for the next 10 Sundays on the Green Point / Chappies route.

Sorry G, but you're the only poster who believes the Argus is filled with vigilante types moonlighting in lycra.

But it may get the message to other road users to respect each other - at least it's a start.

I can't see how you get that.

It is accepted widely that justice needs to be seen to be done. A cycling specific sentence following a widely-viewed extremely violent attack by cyclists on a non-cyclist will be seen as a failure of justice by many. The very large anti-cyclist public will be calling for old school punishment in the sense of retribution and a failure to provide it may only cause further resentment towards cyclists in general. Frankly, retributive punishment may well be what cycling itself needs in this instance.

$h!t just got real.

Interesting that the article mentions that police are going to arrest another person they have identified outside of the two named by the club.

I have no idea what the MC2 membership was before this incident, but it will never be the same again. I doubt any members will dare to ride the Argoos in club gear. Even their FB page is down. It takes just a few bad apples to infect the entire basket.

The item is moving fast into the relms of sub judice. Maybe it is now the time for those involved/ witnessing the incident to start preparing for the court case, and not make any statements not cleared by a competent lawyer.

It is just very sad that MCC has not made sufficient media statements about the behaviour of the two/three members involved. This only has increased the speculation to a fever pitch.

Maybe Supercycling should submit an urgent appeal to televise the trial?

Future sponsorship may be affected if this issue is not dealt with by MC2. David Bellairs alluded to PPA sponsorship yesterday while interviewed by Maythem on Cape Talk.

Ooh I don't know about that - the admittedly small sample taken on Sunday would indicate otherwise

I have to say though I do feel bad for the leader of the club if he is genuinely trying to promote cycling and uplift people he sure didn't deserve to wake up to world war three after the weekend, he was badly dropped by the people involved. We all do stupid things at some point but most of us manage to stay away from crossing the line labelled moronic but in this case they didn't just step over the line they sprinted past it at Olympian like speed.

:D :D Unless one of those arrested ride with blades, the court appearance is going to look rather pale at the moment ;) ;)
