My friend got bumped off the road and ended up with a broken spoke and hub on his rear wheel. Feel sorry for him as he travelled 1600km to get there and was not able to finish

My boet had gastro the night before the race - went to his room at 5am to see him dehydrated and dejected. Expensive trip to CPT for a DNS. He'll be back strong next year though... and we'll both be very careful of what we eat the day before!

I would love to say it's all an image/vanity thing, but I think partly because most of the higher-end bikes would have a tubeless setup and cheaper bikes not.

Quick and easy to put slicks on when you use tubes, a bit of a schlep if you don't. I wouldn't mess with my tubeless setup just for an one-off road race.

That was my guess also. I wont go through the trouble to fit a slick for just one race.

I was surprised by the number of MTB with punctures, I took 3 extra toobs for road bikes on my second lap to help people out, most people pushing flat tyres were MTB. I think its Karma punishing them for doing a road race on a MTB :P Managed to help 2 guys out with tubes and bombs on Sunday :D

Ja, whats up with that. I did 3 Argus rides now, not one puncture on my skinny road wheels with cheap Kenda tubes and tyres.

Also a DNS for me :(

So at around 60km's into the race, near to Soetwater, my rear tyre's (tubeless) sidewall exploded off the beading and after a couple of failed attempts by bike mechanics to patch me up I went home in a sweep vehicle as a DNF.

A first time for me and a very sad ending to a race that's for sure.

Were you also a DNF (Did Not Finish)? Tell us about it here...

Were you riding a Road or MTB?

Was riding a MTB.

Problem is that I had Continental Sport slicks which I used on my previous Alex Rims for road but I buckled both of those due to aggressive trail riding and upgraded to Stans ZTR Flow EX 29'er rims.

The geometry of the new rims are such that I broke a set of tyre levers trying to get the slicks on so decided to keep my Maxxis Crossmark LUST's on with my tubless setup instead.

To counter the extra drag factor, I decided to pump the knobby tyres to 4 bars each (4.1 being MAX) and didn't account for the pressure increase when I was flying down the hot road on the stretch between muizenberg and soetwater.

That extra bit of pressure obviously found a flaw in the tyre and BANG, no more race for me.

You do get Gatorskins in 700 x 28c which fit a 29er rim

I fitted 700x23 gatorskins to my dads 29ER for the Argus. Worked like dream. At Ocean View he hit a cateye so hard that I heard it behind me, but no punctures.

I saw okes with road gatorskins on MTB.. not sure if gatorskin are made in MTB 29er rim size.

They are available. Exact same ones for road bikes. 700c. It is the width that make the difference.

28mm is better for Tandems

35mm is best for 29ers

This is why I bought a proper set of rims for my MTB tubeless and use the stock rims for slicks :) hot swapping rocks..

OT: but where do you buy a set of 35 mm commuter 29er tires? I need for my build project?

Any bike shop should have 700 x 28 or 700 x 35 road bike tyres. For all practical purposes It is the same thing.

The repair center at Soetwater had piles of spare 26inch and road tyres, but not a single 29inch MTB tyre to be had. I guess it was just not meant to be lol...

AHA , you cannot come to a gunfight with a peashooter  ^_^
