Hi Guys,

I currently ride a Marcello frame with a 2002/3 Tiagra groupset and Alex R500 Wheelset.

Looking to upgrade and have to start saving. Which is best to go for first?

105 Groupset new at R6500 and wait 6 months to get it or

Shimano RS 21 Wheelset at R 1599 and get it now?

Wheelset is a good upgrade and will make a big difference to your riding experience.

While you enjoy the feel of your new wheels, you can save up for that gruppo.

The RS21 is not much of an upgrade over your Alex wheels. Get the groupset. The difference between new 105 and 10 year old tiagra is massive. The shifts will be so smooth, you will think the gears are not changing.

Oh ja.....the RS21 are designed for 11 speed, so if you are planning to upgrade to 11 speed at some point, you may need these wheels first

If you wanna get a good set of wheels in the sub 3k bracket look at a pair of Mavic Aksiums. At 1750g they not too bad and they are bombproof.

What Cippo said... Dropping weight on wheels is the way to go. On a bike, rolling weight is a far bigger factor than general bike/rider weight.

+1 on the Askiums, they often come up in the classified at good prices too

You can also slowly upgrade your components as and when cash is available or components need replacing, it does not all have to be done at one time.

For around R3K, I would rather get a set Mavic Ksyriums - better than the Aksiums. Watch the classifieds.

I'm actually looking for a Mavic Ksyrium front wheel after clouting my old one :) Great value for money wheels indeed, but nothing wrong with the cheaper Aksiums.

For under R3k?? Maybe I'm looking at the wrong ones but CWC has them for R11999 on Special?!?!

Noooo, those will be the Ksyrium SL's or something like that which are race wheels and super light.

Just the normal Ksyrium's with no suffix appreciations is what you are looking for ;)

If I were you I'd wait until I could upgrade the whole bike to buy a decent 2nd hand bike with better components and wheels.

If you take R1600 + R6500 for a groupset = R8100, plus what you get for your own bike when you sell it.

That would make for a very decent bike.

Have to agree.

If you wait and keep a close eye on classifieds, you can get Ksyrium Elites or similar for R3000. Awesome wheels and makes a monster difference
