As far as I know there is a simple reason for the helmet and chest restrictions, the helmet is not designed to take a sharp impact, eg when you fall and land on the go-pro it will apply excessive pressure on the mounting cracking the helment and defeating the objective of it. The chest mount has the concern of the full force of the fall been applied to not only the sternum but blow to the heart causing a heart attack. These are all health and safety concerns "imported" from abroad and applied locally like every sport.

That been said if it is mounted on the handle bars that also poses a risk of facial impact or even in the tracia(sorry spelling)

Chest mounting I can "Kind of" see causing an issue. If you eat dirt and the monting is on your sternum and that breaks...you could land in serious trouble...http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sternal_fracture

Yeah, recent race I was at one of the younger guys looked at me and asked, “Are you wearing a chesty without a chest protector?” and I replied “Yeah, what’s the prob… oh… right” All I could think about for the rest of the run was the camera embedding itself in my sternum.

I fully understand the point made for helmets.

Vented helmets are not designed to support extra mounting on the vents. Even if the helmet has a Kevlar skeleton. Full Face DH or Motorbike helmets I can understand.

So if anything, mount on the bike, I agree. You have paid R5k on a camera, but health and saftey first.

Part IV: MTB

Ride Safe peeps!

You are right in this regard

Asked my brother who is a paramedic and MTBiker. The GoPro casing will not give in an accident. So if you fall it will damage your helmet in such an extent that your nugget will get a beating.

If you fall with a chest mount you can break your sternum.

I am not sure who took the first break, but I have since moved my head camera on the motorbike to the bike itself. And the motorbike helmet is much better than my MTB helmet. So taking a chance is not worth it.

I am waiting for my bike mount at the moment. Just waiting for SARS to clear my pakage.

No

If you're a (boring) marathon/funride/dirt-roadie type, I agree with you.

If however you're a trail/enduro/AM/DH rider and you also see utility in having a pretty good wide-angle camera around for other duties, then yes.

This is borderline cynical, but wouldn't the chances of falling on a rock or any other protruding object (especially on a mtb trail) be just as fatal? So... don't record living life, you might break something OR record and show off to friends :D

It would but the chest mount essentially means you're landing with a rock under your sternum EVERY time you fall on your chest. I'm just going to get a chest protector. I need one anyway.

CSA's ruling

14.03 Forbidden devices

In all forms of mountain bike competition:

14.03.001 Radio links: The use of radio links or other remote means of communication with riders during a race is forbidden.

14.03.002 Music players: The use by any rider of any form of music player, audio device or other similar device (e.g. iPod, MP3 Player, walkman, mobile phone) is forbidden during all events and competition as these devices restrict hearing and are considered dangerous to the rider and other riders

14.03.003 Cameras: No form of camera may be mounted or worn by the rider on any part of the body, and may also not be mounted on the helmet of a rider

Compared to the UCI's rule for Downhill

4.3.014 Cameras are not permitted during qualifying rounds and finals. The riders are responsible for securing the fixation of the cameras in order to avoid any danger. The UCI can decide to allow a camera during finals but only for the usage of the TV production company.

Comment:

1 see also, in particular, articles 1.3.001-1.3.003 and 1.3.031

2 cameras may be used during training sessions (article 4.3.021) under the conditions laid down in this article.

Interesting. I'm guessing Red Bull giving each of the top WC DHers a GoPro for promotional footage purposes (seems new this year) is obviously in line with UCI rules, which differ from CSA rules?

Edit: I see you've clarified the Red Bull footage aspect...
