I got a 100m vertical climb behind my house, 90 times should do it, Takes me 5 minutes to the top. Let's say, I take it slow, make it a 10 minute round trip. 890 minutes, that's 15 hours...

Not doing anything this Sunday... Think I will need my head lamp and a banana.

Make that 2 bananas :)

You might be onto something though, maybe a shorter climb that obviously needs to be done plenty times instead of looking for really looong climbs that only need to be done like 10 times

Dont think it really matters. Point is, you're gonna be in the saddle for like 10-15 hours. Besides, how long would it take before you got bored. Attempt 10, 25, 50?

Madness. Kudo's (literally if you link Strava) to anyone who does this.

It's when the going gets really tough that it might be easier to continue on the shorter climb than having to face up to another 12km's on Sani? Or maybe it's just me trying to convince myself that facing a shorter climb 100 times is going to be easier than riding a longer climb 10 times :)

You are probably right about a shorter climb being better, but I know what 8 or 9 hours on a bike feels like, and I definitely don't want to do 15 hours +, not even if it was downhill and downwind, let alone climbing Everest.

Come to think of it, FRAIL might be properly warmed up for this after his ride from C Town to Durbs and back.

Moer that would be the Nico Malan pass for me.

13.8km 673m vertical gain so 13 climbs with a total distance of 179.4km

The pass starts at 803m above sea level and finishes at 1476m. The descent would be cool.

Lets see, um no!

yes but the problem with a shorter climb is that its going to be much steeper which might make it unrideable when you get really tired. it needs to be somewhere in between.. something like merino monster but without all those god forsaken steep humpy bits that make you want to throw yourself off the side. theres a really steep climb here that seems to point straight up. wouldn't take as long to get the elevation but i bet you wouldn't be able to ride it after a while.. walking wont count for sure

So 180 kms, why is everyone waffling on about 15 hours+ then? Also, the guys take like a month to summit everest, so wtf?

So, do you do it on a road bike, or are there extra kudos for a MTB on a trail? Or at least on a jeep track.

There is a climb between 2 hotels, jeep track, 22km, 1005m vertical accent. So 8,5 times, but I don't know if the break pads will handle the decent 8 times?

So you setup seconds at both hotels, drink, food, whatever is needed. It's a hard climb, but the decent has no inclines, so that's all rest.

2 problems, you start the climb at 1850m above sea level, proper mountain climbing. The second is the weather and temperature changes.

Going back to the multiple short climbs, climb for 7 minute, descend for 3, versus, climb for 2,5 hours, descend for 1/2 hour?

Bigger kudos for owning a proper hill, less for the tiny one...

And yes, 2 bananas, you never know if you have a mate ride with you, and, of course, you want to share.

8848 m ascent in one go!!! Wonder how many times you'd have to do the mast at Tokai from the car park to achieve that? Good luck to all you aspirant mountain goats ... will be interesting to follow.

flymango, I once did the mast 3 times having failed on my attempt to go 5 times, only once though as it was for prep for Epic 2013, and these were the stats: Distance: 61.76 km Time: 4:55:07 Avg Pace: 4:47 min/km Avg Speed: 12.6 km/h Elevation Gain: 2,803 m Calories: 3,372 C

must of been messing about if I look at that avg speed.

Fatigue. And you have to make the vertical without rest or sleep between.

Long Tom from Sabie side. Around 35km, 1150m of ascent, starting at 1000m above sea level, and brake pads will be just fine.
