i reckon if they tar it there will be many more car crashes as the taxis will just go faster on their way down and no doubt loose it on the corners.

This is happening, when we went up in June 2014, they where already busy with prepping sections and widening etc. with the escalators up there. Been up there twice with mountain bikes.

So does this mean that Sani's pass will now be a roadies paradise instead of a MTB one?  :whistling:

just get your gearing right, otherwise it won't be a "paradise"...

with the top 3 kms above 15% gradient, you don't want to attempt that on my old raleigh RC3000.

I hope they dont use the same contractors that did a section of dirt road here in Magalies. A year later the road is starting to come up where the sections join one another and the reinforcing steel is starting to come up! Its not tar that they used but concrete. Again the whole road was supposed to be done but apparently the contractor ran out of money so they left it?!

With gearing like that, you will still need a MTB instead of a road bike

A road bike with a compact crank and a 27 I reckon I will do it. Already been up and down on an old canondale rigid with v brakes.

I wouldn't start planning the ride quite yet going to be a hell of a road to build.

Dont think this will happen. They will probably award the contract to one of malema's cousin's companies, millions of Rands will be paid to them and nothing will be done...

Not sure about that. Rumor has it that Malema started a new political party and is not exactly in favor with the current government so most likely won't be on the receiving end of state money for a while

As of last week Sani pass was closed to traffic because large sections had been completely washed away due to the rains. Lots of work to get it back in working condition again, not sure if it has been opened yet.

For the locals especially, the sooner this national road can get tarred, the better.
