Presies...nevermind tyres this and that..

Funny thing though, of all the money I have spent on cycling(I am not disclosing that amount here lol), the money that was spent on experiences like races, stage events vs physical things like tyres / frames / groupsets brought alot more joy.

sounds like you throwing your name in the hat, IF YOU GUARANTEE ME A WIN, ILL PAY THE ENTRY AND SPLIT THE WINNINGS :whistling: :whistling:

Nobody can "guarantee" a win, anything can happen.

I have to wonder.

What is the aim of the organisers with such a big winning purse ?

Who do they plan on getting there ?

Are they trying to put SA mountain biking on the map ?(it already is)

And I disagree that a top adventure racing team will win.

As much as I admire them and respect what they do and are capable of.

The winning team will comprise of cyclists that sit just outside that top 5-10 % of any given field, but they can ride that pace the entire day, they will also be the best when it comes to nutrition and hydration, one of the riders is mechanically very sound and they can perform well under sleep deprivation.

They would also have to be mature enough to get along regardless of what gets thrown at them.

I reckon a RAAM winner is the type of individual we will be looking at to take the winning ticket.

Sounds like you and Frail should give it a bash

Money Money Money. If you got, it spend it. Value is an individually determined thing. Casio watch, reliable tells the time, R500. Rolex watch, reliable tells the time R50 000.

Ignoring the important question of defining what 'expensive' means:

A Specialized is expensive when compared to a Giant. I chose to ride a Giant.

Racing Ralph tyres are expensive when compared to Crossmark. I chose to run Schwalbe.

XTR is expensive when compared to XT. I chose to run XT

You may have exactly the opposite choices and we can have a good debate around the rationale of our repective decisions in the context of our respective expectations, requirments and budgets. But to state as fact that Shimano are charging too much for XTR or that I have too much money for running Racing Ralph's or that Specialized are making too much money is irrational and ignorant.

see that's where you are missing the point - the question was raised "will they get enough entrants" and the answer is yes because it is expensive and therefore exclusive. Nowhere did I say they are charging too much for the entry

My posts weren't directed at you specifically but rather the many others whining about the entry fee.

They won't get enough entrants because it's expensive or exclusive. They'll get enough entrants simply because of the prize money and the fact that anybody who is anybody in the world of endurance sport (i.e. not just cyclists) will be trying to win this money. And the mere mortals will be doing it because it'll be a challenge like no other and at the end of it you have an outside chance of winning $100 000.

The joke is that R100k, well R50k actually per person, is very little for some people... (certainly not me  )

We did the poll here on the hub last year - there are a couple dozen hubbers alone that could drop that sort of money from just one pay cheque.

All the organisers really have to ensure, is that the event gets that cred as the ultimate tough guy event - they really only need 150/200 teams, from all over the world to make it viable. Value for money was never in the brief. This is simply just gunning to be the #1 Mtb challenge - they pull off building the name and making this numero uno on the mtb to do list, and those entries will fly like hotcakes...

My 2cents.

Cycling

I agree cycling does not make economic sense! But what a great sport.

Munga Winner

I think a pro cyclist would take this victory. And this is why;

Pro cyclist don’t compete in endurance event such as RAAP, Freedom Challenge, 365 etc. The main reason is that the financial incentive for victory is far too small, and the damage a race like this do to their body is far too great, thus “sacrificing” the rest of their season.

But with the Munga the Financial incentive is as great as it gets- thus more Pro cyclist would be willing to “sacrifice” the rest of their season or even build their whole season around this one race. And with a great Pro field the winners should come from one of them.

Just a reminder; Pro cyclist can take a beating- ride with broken collarbone, broken ribs… So the Pro’s should be able to take the intense pain/punishment and sleep deprivation that you can expect from the Munga.

On entry fee

No sponsor would be willing to sponsor $1 000 000 for an event like this. So the only way the event is sustainable is with a very hefty entry fee to finance the event winnings. So the $10 000 in my mind makes complete sense for the event to be sustainable. And I desperately hope the event takes off.

(Although I wish the entry fee would be less so that one day I can also try to conquer the Manga.)

honestly i know there is expensive ways of doing things and then there is a cheap way,,,CYCLING MAKES ZERO ECONOMIC SENSE period, speak to mates about cycling who dont cycle they will think you are mad(mine do)

COST OF MULTIDAY EVENTS

BUYING BIKES

UPGRADES

BIBS

Haha! the truth... But geez 100K for a race is pushing it!

This is going to be fascinating to watch unfold. The adventure racers and Freedom Challenge types will have the advantage of sleep deprivation experience/skills, however should the pro cyclists be able to put a couple of hours into them every day on the bike, they could afford more sleep. I can't wait to see this!
