Do you know what you are covered for / Cyclesure?

I got a quote from them (CycleSure) and they were actually a bit rude, only got an email with the quote and they never even followed up.

Phoned Outsurance and got it covered with my policy... havent had to claim.

The advisor told me only Outsurance, Cyclesure and apparently Discovery cover your bike while at a race..... but luckily haven't had to claim...

I claimed from Miway after a crash in a race. We settled on what is fair and they paid for repairs. Only had to stop them from insisting that the work gets done at Cyclelab - still with them.

Interesting piece of information.

With all of this i thought it good to obtain an updated policy book from Auto General where my household items are insured.

Below is the extract of their portable possessions where your bicycle will fit in if it is specified.

All I can say about A&G is be very careful..

I had a client last year who requested to move over from Santam to A&G due to the fact they were almost R200 cheaper (monthly) and included waiver on excess on her vehicle.

Two months later they broke into her house where certain household items were stolen. (watches, kar keys, laptop, jewellery etc.) At the end of the day I had to fight with the A&G managers for nearly 2 weeks to settle her claim. A&G requested proof of purchase of most of the items before paying out. The other household member in the house was insured with Santam and payment of her claim was 3/4 days.

So advice from my side, make sure you have copies (proof of purchase) for all your expensive items with them.

A&G, First for Women and Virseker are the same company. Targeting different markets, policy wording exactly the same.

So I asked a copywriter and designer to work on ideas overnight. I think we'll threaten them with something like this. It's right above the coffee shops so should get good views from cyclists. I'll see what other ideas they come up with:

Some advice, i am also in the Industry................

1. Get a independent broker that works for his money (Commission)

2. Stick to the better known Brands/ Underwriting Companies

3. Put all your Questions on a mail get them answered by the broker and keep that as evidence

4. Cheaper is not always better

5. Make sure about the value of your bike/goods. Send proof there of to the Broker beforehand and let the Broker get confirmation from the Underwriters

6. a Good relationship with your broker helps a lot ( what i mean is stick with your Broker if he delivers)

If you apply above you will have a "painfree" claims experience, believe me !!!

Do the paper work before hand and know about the surprises before you claim...................

Wow if only there was some sort of cover you could get for when stuff like that happens, maybe that you pay a monthly fee for.....oh wait...

My SANTAM insurer said when i asked him... "yes, we do cover against stupidity!!"

I must say, I for one never saw this thread a a rant, merely as a heads up.

Some people seem to think it was an all out rant or I could possibly be wrong.

What I am grateful for is that I am now more educated as to what my policy entails and what I am covered for and how I am covered for it.

I have always liked Cyclesure and have advised many people to go that route.

They have always been good to me, yes not always the friendliest people on the other end of the line, but they have been quite accommodating in my pay outs.

Looking at all their exclusions ,I can understand in todays world where fraud and corruption looks like the norm, that they also need to protect themselves.

However, I am not my bicycles guardian, especially when I am at a race and hungry and need a hot dog or beer, or at the Epic or Sani when it sits in the "general bike park"

These exclusions almost makes it feel like I need to strap the thing to my ankle like a surfboard.

Will Cyclesure possibly re-look some of those amendments , are they maybe a bit too "draconian" I am happy with said company, but if I need to now increase the stress of looking after my bike like it's one of my toes, why do I actually need insurance.

I have seen complexes where the units don't even have walls, it's all open plan which means my kid can't ride his bike, pop in for a quick cold rink and go back out, because his bike might be taken without any forceful entry or any violent attack.

As I said, it's been sobering and a lesson as well as a lecture I personally needed.

I think it's time to put together a "What if" list and Broker/Insurance company needs to complete the list when they quote on your business. Then you will know if they offer the cover you really want!

I didn't see it as a rant either but CycleSure has screwed their client here. Their business proposition is to offer a service tailored to cyclists specifically but they've offered no more assistance to Carpet than she would have received going direct to Hollard so ultimately they're just another business using a superficial brand position to skim their cut from the premiums. If that's the case then I think they don't deserve the support of this sizable community based solely on having a name with the word cycle in it.

What gets me is the policy changes just being mailed with no worry if you are actually aware of them changing.

WHEN I GET EMAILS POLICY SCHEDUAL UPDATE

i spend some quality alone time and go over it 100%, normally the changes are so subtle you wont pick them up

Considering insuring my bikes. Will not be using Cyclesure. Behold the wrath of the internet cyclist and quake, pitiful insurance company. Hahahaha, I mock your annual growth report.
