R327, bridge over the Gouritzrivier. The R327 links to a gravel road just outside Herbertsdale that heads toward the R328 with options to join it at Brandwacht (closer to Mossel Bay) or near the Eight Bells Mountain Inn at the bottom of Robinsons Pass. Either way is an excellent ride. From either point too, one can take gravel to Groot Brak Rivier and George.

The Gysmanshoek Pass is beautiful, did that on a “gravel travel” picnic in the bakkie, with the Missus.

Did you do Rooiberg Pass to Calitzdorp? I went over last week, very rocky.

Sure did. Rooiberg is indeed rocky and, dare I say it, technical for me on the beast. Beautiful, though, even at 31C.

Gysmanshoek, hmmm.... See below.. Firs time wearing adventure pants and I couldn't straighten my leg enough to reach the ground when I stopped. Result? extreme embarrassment. Twice, nogal.

Got to say, I really enjoyed this bend on Rooiberg. Not great quality as it was take from a GoPro video and the lens was absolutely covered in dust .

I can get a 2008 BMW 1200 GS, 75000km for R65000, excellent condition. What's the opinions? Can it still be financed as I haven't got R65k lying under my bed [emoji6]

AFAIK that is too old to finance, unless through a personal loan.

They tend to frown on any vehicle older than 7 or 8 years old these days.

As for the bike, if it has been properly maintained then they are pretty bulletproof........

Looks like some interesting options for those interested:

If something does catch your eye do do all due diligence before parting with any cash....

Our 2 stroke group also got a suspicious ad on Gumtree. RGV250 VJ22 as well as an Aprilia RS250. No pictures, very poor description.

Also in Durban.

One of the local dudes went and look and it turned out to be a collector with TONS of bikes. Mint condition.

He just wasn't arsed whether he sold or not.

Probably needed to show the Mrs he was trying to sell :w00t:  :w00t:

First pic looks like south to north before the real steep stretch, very beautiful in that valley. Yeah, big bikes on some of them roads but at least very comfy on the wide open dirt. My KLR is lekker on the narrow tight stuff but a little of an effort if there are any tar stretches of much length. I rde around 90 kph on the tar, in the perhaps misguided belief that it promotes less wear on the knobblies! Your dusty pic is one of my favourite areas too. That corner is where we had our first gravel travel bakkie tailgate picnic when we moved from Josie to the Garden Route!

The whole area is a dream for Adv bikes! Or Any gravel travel really.

You're quite correct. That piece of Gysmanshoek is going South to North and a bit before the steep part. \That was a bit of "hang on and keep going" I can tell you. Voice in my head kept telling me "Momentum is your friend". If you drop one of the big bikes there I think you would struggle to get going again.

But I take your point about riding the KLR on the tar. On the flatter longer gravel roads the GS just ate up the kms and  once on the N1, well, it's at home on the open road. So the bigger Adv bikes are for sure a compromise. A handful on the technical stuff but a dream on the open road. One has to choose, I suppose.

I may be up in George between Xmas and New Year and would like to ride to Meiringspoort. If so, I'll drop you a line and if we don't go for a ride, we could perhaps have a coffeee and a yarn somewhere..

Here are two more photos from the trip. One at the top of Rooiberg pass and the other in Boschluiskloof. Hot but beautiful..

Will try get as many pics as possible. This is just the warm-up ride. Mostly to get the bike down south for early next year. Then the plan is a week long adventure through the belly of the South Island. More on that once I plan it out.

Looks like you sorted your special part out?

yup! thank goodness!

Lots of blood, sweat, and almost tears went into that rally tower. A few late nights, finishing in the garage at 1am. Now just to hope that it doesn't fall apart, haha

Boschluiskloof, beautiful. If you do Meiringspoort the R407 off the N12 at Klaarstroom is a fine fast run on big ADV bikes. Follows the north line of the Swartburg to Willowmore. Then down to Uniondale snd you have the option of Prince Alfred Pass to Knysna or Kamanassie valley to link to George or Oudtshoorn. If you do Swartburg Pass it is likely to be like the N1 with traffic!

Sadly, I won’t be home. Am out at work til mid January.
