My standards for wine.

Must have a screw top (who has time for corks)

Must be red

Must be under R80 (found some real gems at the NBS & Checkers)

SA is 1 of the few countries where you can still find a relatively good bottle of red for R80 and under. Trust me, we are spoiled here with regards to this. In the US you pay around $10 for a glass of wine in a restaurant. Basic whites sells for about $18 at cellar door in Sonoma and this was 3 years ago. Only other country is probably Chile that comes close to us for value for money. Also tasted some great white wines at low prices in Portugal.

And then we are not even mentioning KWV quota wines if you have some hooked up relatives :whistling:

I usually have stock of decent wines and rarely buy... because when friends and relatives visit, there is always a box or 2 in the boot. Go through about 6-8 bottles a week, if exams & academics are not to pressing :D

Im just as big a wine snob as I am about bikes and I wouldnt drink red wine that is bottled the same year that it is harvested.

So you ride old classics

The market for this is about 1200 strong and they will probably try to bottle 12 000 bottles. Note that there would probably only be about 120 litres of pressed grape juice if they are lucky, so 1% of the wine would actually be pressed by the tyres of riders.

Good luck to Meerendal on this venture, I am grateful that they put so much into mountainbiking, but I would rather take a drive out to Kanonkop for a case of their 2009 Pinotage.
