Our domestic worker's son always wanted to join the police. That was his dream. He could not join SAPS as he did not have a licence, and they can't afford driving lessons or even the learner's test. Long story short, he can now join. He'll make a brilliant policeman, and can hopefully bring some upliftment in his community. Sometimes a story has two sides.

Now let's hope that there are no corruption et al to spoil this...

It's called uplifting people! Most of the guys don't have R2 to there names, by putting them trough the k53 u giving them a basic skill that can be use again and again. Better than spending the cash on let's say a lavish home!

Seems like however our government decide to use taxpayers money people will complain. At least the Chief of police is not buying himself a new fancy car or spending 10mil on an end of year dinner.

I think its a great initiative

How about spending the money on better firearms training or additional policemen salaries?

Or more patrol vehicles to police our crime ridden streets?

Well if that is your view on this how do you feel about the army guys receiving training?

Should persons that want to become pilots go and get their licence before they enrol to the army? Why must we pay for them to receive training on how to fly a plane and handle a firearm?

Is the army/police academy not a government institution that people can use to get further training and education whilst working for them. As far as I know you can enrol at the army and they pay for your studies/training whilst you work for them. How is a SAPS driving school any different.

There is a difference between basic training and advanced training.

By that logic, should we as taxpayers also be responsible to teach them to read and write and wipe there arses before they can be made active.

Some jobs should have a basic entrance requirement.

Police should be :

1. no criminal record

2. code 8 drivers license

3. matric

4. a certain level of fitness.

Dont get me wrong guys, i am all for upliftment.

BUT when there is a critical shortage of flying squad vehicles and no money for fuel for police cars etc and policemen are not being trained properly on firearms etc. My point is that that money could be spent in a better fashion. FOR the police.

Whatever happened to investing in yourself?

If you are dirt poor and want to be a policeman, surely another option could be arranging some form of loan from government that is repaid within your first years salary as an active policeman? yes there is risk here, but even if three quarters of the spend is recovered its something....

Yes there is. But the military won't put someone that just finished school in a Gripen and say let's start your training.

Just because I don't have a drivers licence does not mean that I can't get a pilot's licence and I see a drivers licence the same as your basic pilots PPL licence (both are the basic licence)

I do however see your point. Official police vehicles should not be used for basic drivers licence training.

Slightly off on a tangent here but what cars are being utilised here Wayne?

Little cars like corsas etc.

But the side reflective branding (normally the type that says "benoni public order policing" or something like that) but now it says "Driver Training"

That's all good and well.....now he does a 4 week coarse and gets his licence.Back at the station he gets a call to a robbery and is driving a BMW 335i.He causes a accident because he has just learnt to drive.

He has now cost the tax payer R100k to learn to drive and written off a R450k car.

Someone that joins the SAPS without a licence becomes a burden to others.He/she needs to be driven around and can't work properly.

That person can only be used inside and not actually work outside.

Surely having a drivers license should be a job requirement when applying to be a police officer?

it is and was,

unfortunately it was overlooked,so instead of firing all the people without licences and causing k@k ,as it was the SAPS's fault not the applicants

The instituted this program of getting everyone who hasnt got a licence, licenced

There is no shortage of fliyng squad vehicles in Gauteng, instead of being utilized to patrol and attend high risk complaints, they are being posted on static points on the highway (courtesy of mzwandile petros,x) to do who-knows what.
