Maybe a threat " what bikeshops want from customers" or "bad habits of customers "may be an idea

If I owned a bike shop and someone pitched with their crc checkers pakkie, asking me to quickly set his DR for free because he bought 2 gels from me a couple of months ago I will jaag him.

Many people want to go to the big stores cause they can getter prices, but to be honest you can't really expect them to remember you and answer to your every beck and call if you're #100 that week.

As mentioned, the bike shop is no different from any other specialist shop.

1. Honesty, don't try and sell me stuff I don't need just so you can make a buck. If I walk in wanting to buy the wrong thing, or something I don't need, it's not shoved at me to make a sale.

2. Don't treat me with disdain just because my bike doesn't cost 20k or more, nothing worse then being treated like you're wasting their time because they're an "elite" store and you don't check that box.

3. It's obvious I'm a new kid on the block, I appreciate the advice and being shown how something works when I buy it rather than them just taking my money and showing me to the door.

4. Getting things done properly and on time, but I get this won't be 100% of the time. Fix it and let me know. Communication.

5. Then getting to the point of knowing the people at the shop and they know you where they'll help you out with stuff like letting people view the bike you're selling on their property - winning!

Maybe, just maybe they get oodles of calls a day where the caller is clearly just looking for the "best price" even at times it's quite a biggish item you won't simply find on the floor and after calling the supplier they tell them that they are the 8,9 or 10 th. shop to call for the same item.

I can understand how they sometimes not call back.

E-mails I can assume become even worse.

If they come across as pompous arrogant and negative, maybe it's just that, they are negative and frustrated and I am sure they understand better than most the word "loyalty" is a mere word you find in a dictionary.

I understand you are trying to get a point across sheriff, but I was referring to actually asking a bike shop to order an item, after one has been into the shop, discussed the item needed, price settled etc. Not some random bargain hunting phonecall with no intention of actually buying an item.

Why does one need to be a "known customer" that frequents a place to get a simple follow-up call to advise on stock availability and expected arrival date?

I was once told by a cycle shop that they only cater for the "more serious" riders after i enquired about cheaper tyres, not even discount, just more affordable tyres...

They have actually nor will they ever see a cent of my "not so serious money"

Then decided to upgrade my wheels, brakes and shifters. Phoned a couple of places for quotes

So my question is what do you want form your local LBS?

I expect them to serve me in their shop and to service my bike in their workshop.

I also expect them to concentrate on this and not to spend their time taking telephone calls from bottomfeeders phoning around to save a few rand.

Yeah, I get your point and agree on that, I didn't aim my comments at you, merely quoted and elaborated to get a point across.

Best pricing is secondary..

What I want is that when I ask for something like information or pricing, is to get back to me with the details.

Then, when I have asked to order something, that it is ordered and I'm kept informed on progress.

Sick and tired of incorrect info and poor follow up and follow through, like stories of couriers not delivering blah blah blah...

it blows my mind how many cyclist battle to find a LBS that does what you ask, how u ask and when you ask, without shafting you, maybe i am just lucky but when i walk into my 3 and a 1/2 bike shops(mate who helps me but doesnt own a shop)

i get a friendly howzit DIPS, i get my coffee, i give in my to do list and walk out,

my requests are always met, i dont negotiate the price(although my shops know i am not a box, i have a idea of what parts cost) but i too understand they have bills to pay

loooong story short look until you are happy( why moan constantly) if you not happy move on many more fish in the sea

build up some loyalty, make a effort (these guys work on your brakes FFS)you want to know they got your back so to speak and if you happy, help your mates out and tell them you happy, bring in new customers to you bike shop WIN WIN

MY BIKE SHOPS EVEN STRIP PARTS OFF NEW BIKES FOR ME WITHOUT BLINKING

i say if you want to be treated well in any specialist enviroment, prove from your side you not just there for favours when you cant come right, you there to support them and BE REWARDED FOR IT WITH SERVICE

i think the problem with many cyclist they all want import prices, and they want stocked up shops, and they think the shop must drop a complete build to fit a hanger mr cheapskate imported to save R23.50

as i said in specialist enviroment, you want special attention,a skill set, and attention to detail other wise import it your self, but walking into a specialist shop there ARE obvious costs involved, SIMPLE BUSINESS yes there are idiots trying to get rich quick go back to what i said above MOVE ON FIND THE RIGHT BIKE SHOP

I have propably opend a door here with my post. If i read through all the posts i think the one thing that we all want is trust, trust from both sides. Trust that the LBS gives you the correct information and reasonable price and trust from your side that if you say you will be there you better be.

And i think i have found that at the epic bike shop, with great knowledgeable people and workshop.

If you want some real world advice, take this.

Lance is a great guy, honest and knowledgable.

He is a tip top wheel builder, one of a handful who can build wheels and not just talk about it online.

He has a small business and needs people like you to keep him in business.

If you are unhappy, sit down and talk with him (if ever about anything)

Build a relationship with him and break the stereotype that loyalty does not exist.
