remove the fork and lower headset cup get a engineering firm to make a steel ring approx 3mm thick that fits snug over frame paint it fit it and reinstall bottom headset cup and fork and keep an eye on it to see if the crack runs at all. not a good idea to weld there, repaired a frame that cracked this way but top repair 4 years and still no problem or crack running they should not charge too much. hope this helps not a plastic cable tie or tape = hospital bills

Thanks Sampras, good idea with the steel ring, Glad to get a decent reponse from the first two responses thought I had posted in the Friday Funnies by mistake!

But went out this morning and bought a new bike anyway, decided to try the 650B club Gaint Trans 4.

You need to post some pics.

Don't know of anyone in SA getting the Trance 4. Plenty Trance 2s around.

What price did you get it for?

Giant Trance is a very cool and capable bike, good choice.

If I can add to this. A technique to stop the crack running is to drill a small hole at the end of the crack. Close the hole with epoxy glue to prevent water and dirt getting in.

Decided instead to fit a steel hose clamp, and donated it to my gardener who has to walk about 8km from where he stays to come and do my garden, he is now a very happy chappie

Eish, dude - I'd still take it to an engineering shop to be welded. Hose clamp isn't going to do the job for long!!!

You get some pretty dik hose clamps, the band on the ones used on extreme pressure fluid lines are almost 1mm thick.
