this is a very sad incident.

But lets not use this for grandstanding that mtb should be allowed more access to act as security patrols.

as a community we have neither the training, nor legal mandate to carry out such a function and with the value of bicycles being what they are, we merely represent a more lucrative target.

Until we know what transpired, grabbing the pitchforks may not be the best advice. I for one am interested in what the investigation finds. Anything could have happened, he might have said something, we all know tik is unforgiving.

What??? So he gets attacked, robbed, protects his fellow hiker, gets stabbed three times (once in the heart) and you think maybe he said something to a tikkop to have caused this? Bru, I really hope I misread your post.

Read today that police arrested 4 mountain dwellers as possible suspects.

A really sad day, when our Beautyful Peninsula all of a sudden is not that beautiful a place to live in any more.

No more safe hiking on Table Mountain,No more walks on the beach at Muizenberg because tikkoppe from Vryground are robbing people on the beach,No more fishing at Strandfontein at 5am because you could get shot,No more safe cycling on Table mountain.

Condolences to the deceased and I agree with you on grandstanding - not that I think that was the intention at all.

But I dont agree that mtb cant play a role in mountain safety, bicycles are multiples times faster and cover much more distance than hikers/ runners and most cyclists carry communication with them - response times and coordination could be much better .

We need more responsible behaviour by some riders - that's just education (like getting people wear helmets was), but I have yet to come across a group of hikers or runners who are not glad to see a responsible group of mtb riders - they all have a common purpose.

For that matter, if Sanparks had some fit rangers, mtb will be the ideal way for them to cover large parts of the mountain.

Off for my morning run around Sandy Bay.....

Would you like to start a separate thread please? Work was conducted on this in the past and there is an opportunity. Don't want to cloud issues

The question was raised at the start, what does a hiker have on him that could provoke a violent attack like this? Did the situation escalate? Do we know what we are dealing with? I for one would like to have answers before setting out on my bike.

Guns are being found on shoplifters in Tokai.. petty thieves. Would you not want to know this before grabbing his arm in the shop?

@dips Is it not ok to to want to know more?

This is the last I'm contributing to this.

What facts could possibly come out that would realistically change what we already know i.e. a 72 year old hiker was robbed, tried to defend himself and his friend and got stabbed three times in the chest and left for dead.

What facts, please?

He called the guy a c*nt? So what, the guy is a c*nt, and that will never justify assault, nevermind murder.

He pepper sprayed or tried to pepper spray or taze the guy? That would have been in self-defence. Still no justification.

He, unprovoked, told the guy to get lost and the guy lost his cool, stabbing him to death. Sorry, ignoring the improbability of this scenario, how does that absolve the guy from, you know, murder????

I'm not seeing anything here that makes what happened less barbaric and less deserving of immediate action.

Stop making excuses for inexcusable conduct. The world is going to sh*t and we're out of TP.
