Can anyone recommend a mechanic for the event? Someone who is prepared to wash the bikes as well as service them.

When you take as long as I do to finish a race you need all the help you can get.

No need. Your bike gets washed for you. Just add lube. There are plenty of bike shops and mechanics at the camp sites should you need.

By the way - I'll be FLYING up...so cannot carry unnecessary items...CO2 bombs are an issue, i hear.

We had the same problem flying over, we bought co2 from one of the stalls at registration

A few minor points:

- A stage race is NOT as scary as one thinks.

- You DO NOT need to take the kitchen sink with you.  At berg n bush I needed a new tyre, bought it and got it fitted for LESS than my LBS.

- There is ENOUGH food en route.  Sure, a goo or two or your type of drink will work, but the tables are STACKED so don't stress about taking too much

- Key things to bring (chain link, brake pads, lube (needed en route), plugs, Imodium.

Thanks for the advice.

I'm a first time entrant this year and nice to have updates of what to bring and what not to bring...
