It is the riders doing the winning .... look at the DH scene and there one finds the Santa Cruz boys (Using the Santa brand here in reference to previous posts) wining many world cup and champs titles.

But really now, for the average rider not out to win big races is a bike with this price tag really even necessary ... I think not.

this thread is about the Epic, not really a DH bike in my opinion, so not sure why we are going back to that.

I agree R130k for a weekend bike is a lot, I have even said it's too much for the average vet oom....

But really now, for the average driver not out to win big races is a Ferrari 458 with that price tag really even necessary.... I think not.

If it's too much people won't buy it. You charge what people are willing to pay. Not much is going to change that, especially reverting back to DH and Santa Cruz the whole time. How did CptArmpies say earlier, this isn't a "Post your Santa cruise" thread.... :)

If it's too much people won't buy it. You charge what people are willing to pay. The way things have gone with the explosion of MTB'ing and the way that every season, or even half season there is a "new" and prices going sky high faster than a Ferrari 458, it alienates many due to the pricing ..... rather the "must have new and shinny goodies" riders get the pricing up. Not much is going to change that, especially reverting back to DH and Santa Cruz the whole time. How did CptArmpies say earlier, this isn't a "Post your Santa cruise" thread.... :) Not concerned RE the Sant vs Spaz debates, just used a reference to point out to the "Specialised is everything in cycling" crowd

The car industry has battled with this for decades: merc v BMW v Audi, LR v Toyota, Bentley v RR, Ferrari v Lamborghini.

Honestly, who cares?!

I happen to have an epic and love it. That won't stop me from reading up on the Vipa thread and appreciate that the Vipa is also a great bike. Or the scalpel.

Let's all just grow up and appreciate that different people like different bikes. If we all like the same thing, life would be terribly boring.

It's not about spez marketing, or podium finishes. If you buy into that then you are as guilty as the next guy.

Get on your two wheels and ride into the sunset...

Have to agree with you. I love a Ferrari, most of them, absolutely hate the look of a Porsche, love the R8, hate the Mcclaren mp12. You get the point, same with bikes, I really dont like the look of the Giant anthem, but it rides nice enough, like the look of the Scott, hate the ride. So ja, dont brand bash. find what works in your budget. I like the fact that I can have Spez shoes, and helmet and bibs and gloves etc etc. Others I know hate that.

Looking forward to my 67 minutes of endorphins for orphans race tomorrow, rocking baggies and my Stumpy HT, gonna be wet wet wet. Enjoy the weekend guys.

S-Works Epic 29 with the new Rockshox RS-1 inverted fork with their Predictive Steering hub laced to Roval Control SL carbon, hookless rims.

It also gets their new XCP short travel dropper post that’s borrowed by the Diverge. It has 35mm of drop with a carbon body and internal cable routing only.

Predictive steering? Really? That's a crazy price.

Retrofit for yours Gerhard?

Not a bad idea, the 2014 frame is exactly the same as the 2015 and the price of the 2015 has increased by 20k by the looks of it. So if I spend 18k I'm up on the deal -say a 2014 second hand goes for 80 k + 18k = 98k , which is 32k cheaper :) Suddenly the 2014 second hand price has increased!

Here is another

With dropper seatpost!!

So they kept the following unchanged:

Frame design

Decal design

Rims

Stem

Handlebar

Seatpost now the same as the new Tarmac and seems a seat with carbon rails are standard. Fork is amazing, i will go for the XTR version for s change. I see the dropper seatpost is also a " brain" no cable and you must add pressure

If I may, I really get annoyed when people start throwing cars in to the mix.

There is a vast difference from a Hyundai to a Subaru to a Porsche and a Zonda.

Bikes are bikes, no more no less.

What affects the price ?

Exotic materials such as carbon, titanium and high grade alloy's.

(Thank goodness steel has come down in price over the years)

So we now have carbon wheels with triple butted spokes and alloy nipples that cost R 12 per nipple.

Carbon cranks with a highly engineered centre spline, on a top end bike of any brand you get brakes with carbon bits, the top of the line group set and carbon wheels.

In the end of the day, strip the entire bike down to just the frame, remove the RS1 and you sit with the Specialized Epic, off the bat you are paying a premium for their FSR patent, the brain shock and their FACT carbon manufacturing process.

Now let's move on and take those parts that are sitting in a box, what are we strapping them on to ?

There is not one brand name manufacturer that makes rubbish in this day and age anymore, yes they all have their marketing drivel but in the end of the day, no matter what brand you choose from, that box of components will get strapped on to frames across all manufacturers.

As I said ,nobody makes rubbish anymore, they simply can't afford to do so, the market is way too competitive.

Cars are a different ball game all together, we start toying with vastly different chassis, suspensions, engines, body work and then you also pay a premium when Pinninfarina or any other auto designer slaps his name on to it.

This has nothing to do with cars and how vastly they differ, this is about value for money.
