Seriously Miff.

I entered myself for the 52km and my sons, 11 and 13 for the 22km. All paid for and confirmed on the 30th July. Got an Email this morning from the organisers claiming that they had made an error in allowing my sons to enter. This was done in the interest of safety as they are too young...... what B$ll Sfit. My sons, both doing well in a various XCO races are probably more capable than a lot of the weekend warriors that are going to be at risk out there. How and where should youngsters start riding if they are being prevented from participating in events like this.

My sons are totally amped up for this, dreading their disappointment when I have to break the news.

To the organisers, Andy, what is the reasoning behind this please?

Hey @Ghost1...

First off, we're terribly, terribly sorry about the admin stuff up. Age guidelines were misinterpreted when event was set out. No excuses.

Here's the full set of info. Communications, emails etc are flying out to the 40+ or so kids/parents that fall within these age brackets...

  • No U12's can ride - sorry!
  • 12 and over can ride 22km (IF they sign a liability waiver AND ride with a guardian)
  • 14 and over can do 52km

Obviously a full refund is available if anyone falls outside of those rules and has booked already. All you have to do is contact Eunice at CycleEvents. eunice@cycleevents.co.za

Hope that clears things up - and once again, really sorry for the mixup.

Got a detailed reply from the organisers on this, thought it might be interesting for everyone to read...

How does one find the route?

The route will be marked and ready for race day

The sections in the storm water drain are going to be interesting to say the least... the 1 foot dropoffs every 10 meters with slippery surfaces are going to test even the skilled riders, and the section to Innesfree Park isn't the most sanitary spot Ive ever witnessed. We sent a letter to the organizers with some constructive criticism and haven't heard back from them so I only hope for their sake that people take a LOT of care. Try riding that part of the course just to get a feel. It will help you immensly of the day.

The Juma is an Urban Adventure, not a traditional mountain bike race. When you line up at the start you will be one of 5000 privileged riders who will breaking ground in a new experience which will require a new mental approach to this race. As much as we have created a unique experience, you must be prepared to adapt to these new conditions and challenges.

Storm water drains will be slippery where green moss has grown. You will get wet! Ride with caution at your own comfortable pace. Metal scaffolding ramps will be relatively steep. For cautious riders form two queues as there is enough space to have walkers on one side and riders on the other side. Some of the tunnels are low or have low overhead pipes, so they must be ridden accordingly. New sections of single track have some testing technical challenges. Whilst we will all be on a new learning curve, remember its “challenge accepted”!

Brace yourselves :)

As long as there are not any crazy bottlenecks, I'm game!

Got you an answer from the organisers, it's really accomodating :)

"That’s no problem, they can just do the 22km if they don’t feel well. The timing mats will just pick up when you start that you decided to do the shorter route."

But obviously we hope you're feeling it.

Someone has to keep me company at the back of the pack.

   very very cool

Does the route split at a certain point?

That's crazy - those 2 kids CAN actually ride - unlike a lot of the weekend wannabees that are going to be riding/walking.... my opinion -  if Ghost1 signs the waiver, then they should ride.... I will personally countersign to certify he is of sound mind when he does it...

(Clearly I do know these 3.... :) )

I'm not demanding anything.

I dont ride the spruit because it's a **** ride, chances of being hijacked, or riding through some sort of crap, either human or animal is pretty high. Not to mention that if you are to ingest the water, your tottie will definatley fall off.

I make the choice, I did it once and swore never again.

My statement relates to spending 1.5bar on the route, and not cleaning up the crap = money wasted.

like painting a drol in pretty colours....

How long since you`ve ridden the route? I think you should reconsider, the spruit faeries have done a great job creating a route under he road at Victory park and at Craighall park, Republic road and William Nichol, The grass is still  pretty short along River club so you can spot the faeces, human or animal from a distance. There are lots of little diversions from the old path which make things a bit more interesting.  My wife is a real girlie weekend rider and even she was very happy to ride with me all the way to Witkoppen road, Take a weapon/wetwipe with you in case you hit some crap :whistling:

Only entered the 22km, recently recovered from injury so plan to take it easy.

Still looks like it'll be loads of fun, concerned about bottle necks, that's what put me off the 94.7 MTB.

I was in for the 50k, but a stint in hospital this week has ruled me out

Just hope they have got ducks.in.row and have had the forsight to foresee the unforeseeable
