Prices at Shops - what are they smoking

Price of of the top of range S-works Epic in December R96 000 with an exchange rate of 10.80.

The exchange rate is now exactly the same 10.80.

The expected price of the new S-works Epic is R124 000 with SID shock not inverted one (that's R130 000)

So essentially identical bikes and 25% inflation over one season.

The answer its pure economics, the demand is increasing and people are prepared to pay more so the suppliers will charge as much as they can until demand drops off.

The only thing to do is shop around and have an open mind when it comes to brands.

Or just pay up

The impression given is that this only happens in cycling stores

My point exactly which is what I was trying to point out by starting this string.

And we now have alleged big box retailers in the fray and the prices have gone up, as well as the margins.

However prices cannot defy gravity and the underlying value becomes disconnected from the asset, you are in for a big crash.

So what we need to do is boycott the local market and mechanisms who are trying to supply us at these prices.

This is unsustainable. Its a bubble market

I still call BS.

Despite the Competition Commission finding evidence of collusion by bike shops at more or less the same time?

I think the from the OEM to the brand holder to the distributor to the LBS everyone in the chain is just too greedy. But I think the biggest chunk goes to the brand and if the brand is also the OEM just so much more so.

How can a bicycle cost more than a family car. No wonder the sport is so out off whack. With racing teams spending millions on the sport for their advertisers and sponsors who in return charge us a premium for their products. We pay a brand because the brand wins races and holds patents with big names that we hang onto.

The same thing happened in the smartphone industry. We pay more for a phone than a fully functional computer.

I buy from www.chainreaction.com its a UK web site fantastic selection for chamois cream I believe the cream they use for cows udders is the way to go udderit or something like it well known and used by the serious mtb multi stage racers

Having carried out a non-randomised, uncontrolled, single blind study of udder creams, the best by far is Madadji, yellow tub, R37 at Dis-chem.

They would have bought the stock earlier in the year when the exchange rate was lower.

Could be that could be 'performance enhancing'.

Reminds me of one sani where they gave out tubes of Vooma. 'What's this' asks one guy. 'Shammy cream' sez his mate.

Aparently they were having heated words at the end when the guy's shorts had fused to his arse...

Moral of this thread is, if you want to buy anti-chafe creme, you should buy some vaseline as well.

Being petroleum jelly, it must be linked to the oil price, so you better budget for Vaseline at a higher price than last year this time.

I went down to Cyclelab today and wanted some chamois cream. So i decided to treat myself to Assos. However when i looked at the price I was needless to say a bit shocked. R 249-00 for a tub.

Now i know that this stuff is great but i also know that the average price was R 110-00 to R 130-00 when i last bought.

So what has changed to get from R 130-00 to R 249?

Then I went looking around there and I think that I was clearly bemused.

Shoes for R 4999.

Pearl Izumi jerseys R 1900-00.

Garmin Edge 500 R 3750-00

And lots of other examples.

Now unless i am living in an alternate reality, those prices are high and the margins are stupendous to say the least.

And they have gone up appreciably since i last looked.

So it seems like the concept of a large volume retailer also lead to a much higher cost base and appreciably plump margins.

Or am i missing something vital here.

Prices from overseas shops don't look anything close.

just speel met die ouki en brei daai velletjie - cheaper , lekkerder en langer beter effek
