Tubeless Conversion

Hi all,

So this passed weekend I finally picked up my new bike, An Anthem 27.5 3.

My second ride out I got two punctures 10km into my ride.

When I purchased the bike I opted not to do the tubeless conversion.

So last night me and a buddy tried to do the tubeless conversion on my wheels.

The rims are SXC-2 with Schwalbe Racing Ralph Performance line.

We didn't use any tape cos I read that the wheels are tubeless ready.

We put in a Stans valve, put in some sealant and tried to inflate the tire with a foot pump after this didn't work we tried a bomb, that inflated the tire.

The tire had a couple of leaks on the side walls but some shaking of the sealant fixed that.

The wheel held pressure for about 3-4 hours before i went to sleep and in this time i laid it on each side for an hour.

So this morning when i wanted to fit the wheel i see that the wheel lost all the air.

Is there something I did wrong?

Any comments welcome.

1. You need tape, as already stated.

2. When inflating, remove the valve core and use a good floor pump, you might succeed. Otherwise buy an adaptor which enables you to use the compressor at the local filling station. Bombs will destroy the life of your sealant. Try seating the tyre before putting in the sealant, less of a mess while learning.

3. Check out one of the youtube clips on how best to do it.

4. If you have a swimming pool you can find out where your leak is. Do not submerge the hub!

5. Eventually you will buy tubeless rims. Mavic 819

6. More info on your rims. http://forums.mtbr.com/giant/giant-p-xc-s-xc-wheelset-thread-675185.html

Thanks very much, PlentiPotential

My wife is in town so asked her to stop in at the LBS.

She's picking up the Joe's conversion kit, which has everything you mentioned

So will be giving this another go tonight,

You guys reckon the tires are fine for this conversion? Is there nobody that has done the conversion with these tires and rims?

No, they are not... you need the snakeskin version of what you have (my personal opinion, even those are crap)

I stand to be corrected but the Joes kit comes with a valve attached to a rubber strip that looks like tube that you stretch around the rim, rather use tape over the spoke holes because if that tyre goes flat the chances of it sealing perfectly again is 50/50.

my XTC had the same tires and I did a tubeless conversion with them.

I did however replace them with tires which have proper grip and sidewalls (read continental)

do not use Joes its complete crap, the rim strip will allow it to seal but the sealant is ***.

use stans or nothing.

the tires will work but as you have already seen they will weep selant untill the micro holes are sealed. they do have very thin and soft sidewalls though so apart from sidewall punctures you will feel the tires flex significantly when cornering, a tube adds stiffness and negates this but low pressure on a non tubeless ready tire and even some tubeless ready ones at low pressure will cause flex and make your ride very nervous.

Thanks for the advice,

I'm definitely getting some other tyres but if I can get a couple of months out of these why not.

You will, just make sure you know how to fix lots of punctures... Unless you only ride tar

Well then I should be looking at getting a decent set of tyres,

What tyres do you recommend?

All my riding will be on dirt road, service roads and fire roads and on weekends I'll do some trails.

Very little to no tar riding.

Should i be looking at UST or Tubeless ready?
