Iv been traing over the last few weeks for a MTB ride in doing from George to CPT.

I havent been doing huge amount of training, just a few spin classes in the week and 50+km rides on the weekend. Iv been feeling strong on the rides and think im in semi fair shape for the ride.

However, yesterday I went for a training ride that included the Breedts Nek climb near Harties. about 10km into the ride I started to develope pain in my left leg behind the knee which iv never experienced before. The pain wasnt excessive but it was affecting my pedal stroke and I wasnt able to climb and ride as well as i wanted. I can still feel the pain in my knee today but its not to bad.

What im asking is if anyone else has experienced a sudden onset of this type of pain as in my case and what the possible causes and solutions are ?. Im 3 weeks out from the ride so Im keen to have this dealt with asap.

Have a good Sunday.

I had the same and can offer the same advice/solution that Ham has given. It definately has something to do with saddle height but the last Physio I went to seemed to think that it was certain muscles in my legs that either needed to be stretched or strengthened.

Thank you for the reply guys. Im sure its not my saddle height as iv done 1000's of km already without an issue and also had my bike fitted professionally by BikeFit.

I did 45min on the Wattbike last night and seemed to be better so im just gonna monitor it over the next few days.

im going to get slated/flamed for this, but i have had bike fits before, and over time my saddle height has changed, yes i am old but not that old before the chirps come flying in,

It could be from over use and certain muscle groups are not strong enough to deal with the workload.

The best thing to do is rest!! and then get it checked out.

I've been struggling with knee problems the last few months and that's what i was diagnosed with by a knee specialist.

I've now been given weird strengthening exercises to fix the problem.

When my knees started hurting i was extremely fit.

Go see a bio and soon as you can.

Your bike set up might not have changed - but you might have.

Maybe a bit over trained a slight strain really. Best advice. Go to a biokenitist, and have them check you out.

With my knee pain it related to different leg lengths due to knock I took on the hip because of a lie down. Some stretching and painfull manipulation to get the tendons back to normal and all is well again :)

I have developed a very similar pain behind the knee, in my right knee. I'm not convinced that it's linked to saddle height as it seems to have developed more the more I stand up to pedal to keep my momentum going in whatever gear I am in at the time.

It may be linked to foot position in some way as I am constantly changing my right foot placement. I use flat pedals on my bike with some good pins for grip. They are in fact the same pedals I have on my unicycle. But then again it's not like I'm doing much different apart from standing more.

Sounds like a popliteus overuse injury or maybe PCL inflammation from slight strain(if it hurts when going up stairs then that usually PCL). ICE,HEAT, ICE,HEAT..15min at a time. bit of massage. then see what it does. if it still hurts go to the doc.
