Not really, you are looking at R8-10K

Oh.

damn!

I was hoping for a more attractive price than that...

Powertap G3 goes for about R8k either on its own, or already built up if you are lucky.

And then you need a head unit (Garmin). So you are in for at least R10k...

I think that coolheat is going to bring them in, and estimated pricing was in Bicycling or Thread

Thanks for the replies.

I tried looking into getting an 11 tooth cassette or a 52 tooth big ring, but its hard to find a 9spd 11 tooth cassette, and the 11 cassette would give me a better ratio than a 52 - 12.

I am quite a numbers geek (studying BSc in Human phys and Biochem) and read quite a bit on training techniques and how to analyse power, so I don't think that the analysis etc. using the power meter would be too much of a problem. I won a free program at Cadence Cycling centre in Durbanville and have been using the Cycleops there, which is the first time I have ever ridden with power. I find it much better than just heart rate, especially when doing intervals and knowing what w/kg you need to sustain for certain events/races. Also monitoring actual training improvement based on outputs at heart rate vs just feeling better. Some days i feel bad but still produce good numbers while others i don't produce so well but feel good. It just seems like a much better investment.

Does anybody know someone who can get hold of a 9spd 11 tooth cassette please?

@Thomo - roughly 14k if i save up until November.

Cool! So, you'll be able to use a wattbike at Cadence and upgrade your machine. Sounds like a solution

If you are just starting out with Power training, buy the groupset and a powercal HR based power meter. Not as accurate as a hub or crank powermeter, but gives you 90%+ accuracy which will be perfect for where you are. Best of both worlds.

I am very analytical and love looking at the data. Read quite a few books on training, but always trained with HR. I got a PT recently and it opened up a new world. If I were in your shoes 5 months ago I would have gone groupset, now it its no question, powermeter. A powermeter without having a deep understanding of how to use it is useless. My advice is to download this book http://www.amazon.co...r/dp/1934030554 (free if you know how to search) and start reading it. If it bores you, go groupset if you cant get enough go powermeter.

Upgrading your bike is a bottomless pit, you will always have something to buy before a power meter (I had for 7 years). Rather make the first upgrade a powermeter.

Oh, also do not need a expensive head unit if you have a Samsung s4 and up. It has a ANT+ chip built in so you can pair your pm, hr, cd, spd to it. Works amazingly well.

I know someone who is getting her new stages power meter next week, and will then be selling her complete Joule 2.0 wheel and headunit for around 3K. it's not the latest or the greatest PM, and is a bit porky to race with, but for training is brilliant....

Usually the bikepower lads can get these up to so close to the latest you won't notice the difference.... for a small fee of course.... :) They converted my wired SL to ant+ for me - in one day, out the next..... great service.

This one is the ANT+ version. It's been damn good actually - got her to Kona. But the Rim we want to use in Kona is a Campag G3 rim and is not compatible with the PM. Real world weight of complete wheel, tyre, cluster and skewer is 1.8kg - 240g heavier than the wheel she will be racing with

Gonna be a good deal for someone.... :) Isn't Kona pretty flat? then aero is the important bit, with weigh having next to no effect...... but I can see why you would want something lighter for that kind of event.
