I love to MTB with my dog.....he is a 3 year old Weimaraner boy!!

We normally go to Majik Forrest as it is dog friendly, he knows every turn by now. Sometimes we past other cyclist, but he is not to worried about them, just keep on running!

One thing is he is very good with recall and that helps a lot.

Hope you can see this video:

Cannot wait for this!

Awesome, congrats! I have a Jack Russel that joins me for shorter rides, amazing how quick she on the single track.

Just remember to take extra water for your dog.

Dogs on leashes and their owners having them under control is welcomed anywhere and anytime. I love them.

I detest dogs and owners who don't have them on leashes in public spaces.

And don't tell me you dog is child friendly. As a responsible parent you can't ask me to put my trust in your dog. That will be highly stupid of me, more so after you read all the stories of kids being mutilated, traumatised and killed by dogs. Sometimes by their own dogs. And don't throw statistics that more children get injured and dies of falling off a chair etc. Until it happens to your child...

I had to pack up my things and family on several occasions because dogs were roaming free. So you might think you doing your dog a world of good by allowing it to roam free, spare a thought for families, like me that fear that a dog will attack one of his toddlers.

I love animals, I love dogs and if I had the time, space and money I would gladly have one. And that should in anyway be the prerequisites for owning one.

Anyone have experience with jack russels as a traildog ??

The reason I ask is I regularly play with mine (fetch ) we have quite big yard diagonaly almost 49m and she sprints and brings back a ball well over an hour if I have enough time.

So today I put her on a leash and went to ride with her around the block or so I thought , I was planning to ride beside her but she kept on pulling me max speed was 22km/h (not pedaling but pulling me) this went on for just under 5km and when we got she took like 4/5 min to recover.

she is not aggresive towards people but weary of other dogs ( a few butt-sniffs sorts this out quick) she may need a bit more training i.e. just to stop from running away , but that is it

I have read that they are mostly considered working / hunting dogs now I don't understand what that means in terms of being a trail dog hence this post

any advice will be greatly appreciated

Haven't had personal experience with them, but maybe this will help.

Try make contact with Eckhart from Cascade Manor in Paarl, he had a jack russel that spend time with him on the trails. He is on Facebook.

The only advice I can give you is to start slowly.....by saying that, do a 3km ride with her and ad a km every week. Jack Russels can run for hours but you dont want to over run them.

How old is she?

I also started 3 years ago with my weimaraner and he also pulled me like crazy, but ever since I got the recall under control, we run without a leash at Majik Forest Cape Town.

I haven't taken our JR out on a public trail, but on our farm she is great and can keep a 15-20km/h pace for about 8 km. Jack Russels tend to run ahead a bit and explore, so with a leash I think they wouldn't enjoy it as much as they should.

As mentioned, start slow. But I would rather suggest increase the speed instead of the distance. They can naturally jog for +20 km if they stay hydrated and cool.
