we take our dogs walking most sundays in Cascades...they run free and love it....we only put them on the leash when we go past the downhill part because i would hate for them to have an incident with a dh rider... they absolutely love it ...and dont interfere with the cyclists at all

Lol.... "Often they are referred to as "velcro" dogs because of their loyalty and affection."

I say again, this is not going to be an easy choice...

When the decision is made and when the pup is ready, I think something like this will be in order. :w00t:

Not sure dogs are allowed on trails on farms (specifically Tygerburg area), have seen an irate farmowner reprimanding a walker for bringing his dogs onto the farm at Contermans. There is also the local wildlife to consider i.e. mice , snakes, birds, rooikat etc.

Happy with the dogs.

It is the Owners that need a slap every now and again, for badly trained dogs

Very Un-cool to have a dog snapping at you heels whilst out riding

To be honest I am also not a fan of a greyhound, they are too big for me. The whippet is smaller and have better proportions in my opinion.

It is a very gentle dog, but is exceptionally playful and social towards other dogs (especially when properly socialised) and one never has to worry about them being aggressive. No other dog is as elegant as a whippet when they run at full speed (it is quite a sight), and they have amazing agility.

One of our pack 'Cake' is a whippet/Africanis SPCA special and she really is a great hound. Like hopefield has said seeing her in full stride is absolutely awesome. I've had her running next me at 49km/h (checked it on the GPS when I got home). They are natural runners and have a great nature.

I have however noticed (with greyhounds too) that they can be quite skittish at times, especially with new dogs, but good early socializing will sort that out.

Yea, but riding with one at full tilt make you feel fat and slow......

That sucks, I mostly ride there... Will see who I can confirm with, but there is still time, so maybe things will change..

Also I think a major factor relating to how owners/other rides/people take to a dog on their land/the trail is how well the dog is trained and controlled. A dog that has almost army type command training will received far better than one going totally out of control... This could be the same for wildlife, with enough training the dog should just ignore?? Yes no?
