Raydek Posted July 22, 2015 Author Posted July 22, 2015 Been quite some time since the decision was first made, but we have a puppy on the way.. Now trying to decide on pet medical aid… there are a few out there.. Can anyone recommend a certain one?
nonky Posted July 22, 2015 Posted July 22, 2015 It's all fine and dandy until someone gets bitten or rides over fresh poo or rides into a dog and hurts themselves or the dog or the dog chases/attacks wildlife, which is when the owner feigns innocence and says, "but he NEVER does that..."
Vlakvark T Posted July 22, 2015 Posted July 22, 2015 I have to confess to being a Labrador freak, so, here is my very biased take on them:They are extremely easy dogs to live with and because they are not at all aggressive, it is easy to run and cycle with them. They are highly trainable. If you like the beach or swimming, no other dog even comes close. They take 2 years to mature, until then they chew things like you can't believe and they shed hair like you can't believe. They don't mind small properties and they cope well with being left alone. Because they are smart, they need regular stimulation and exercise. they tend to get fat if you overfeed them. They are medium distance runners, not marathon runners. Also look into something called a Vizsla. It is a Hungarian breed of gundog. Smart, trainable and very good at running longer distances. Difficult to find a puppy. Rhodesian Ridgeback. Great company, athletic, great temperament. Lots of energy, but not (quite) as smart as the others we talked about. The Huskies run incredibly well (hardcore marathon dudes) but they have a tendency to keep on running and get separated from you and get lost easily if not on a lead. They are also more difficult to train and you have to watch that they don't overheat (actually, that goes for all breeds).Have a interesting discussion with the current SA dog /MTB trail runner.According to him he used the African dog to to pull him on his MTB. (Long distance champion) (Never knew this sport). This guy staying in Irene and according to him they are better than the Huskies on the running and pulling. He trained with this dogs every day in the field. It seem like a solution for my tired legs. MTB with African Dogs.

No hassles and easy to deal with.
KingTJ Posted July 22, 2015 Posted July 22, 2015 I ma cool with trained dogs, would love to get one myself...I am a big fan of Rhodesian Ridgebacks..I guy had one @ giba a couple of years ago and the dog was never a problem.
TheTashkentExpress Posted July 22, 2015 Posted July 22, 2015 Sheesh, contentious issue. There's not much nicer than seeing a dog who is really pumped about getting to chase it's human around at high pace along an mtb trail. But then...(and this has happened to me more than once)... you are riding down some of the best single track ever, you're in the zone, you just cleared that gap jump that you didn't have the nuts for last weekend, it's an awesome late summer day and you think that life couldn't be better. Then you smell something funny.... Riding over dog **** is not like stepping in it, where you can just wash your shoe and it's all good. Generally I find when I've ridden over it, it get's flicked up from the front wheel to provide an impressively uniform coverage from crotch to chin. And it's not cool if you've driven for an hour to be there and don't have a spare shirt.

DJR Posted July 22, 2015 Posted July 22, 2015 I'm thinking of getting a fatbike specifically so that I can run Rufus on the beach.....do you think my wife will see through my plan?
Raydek Posted July 22, 2015 Author Posted July 22, 2015 What you getting Ray? Hungarian Vizsla…. I haven't met her and I already lurv her…. http://img01.deviantart.net/af0f/i/2008/265/5/6/luca_the_hungarian_vizsla_by_tyyneys.jpg
King Dean Posted July 22, 2015 Posted July 22, 2015 One of our pack 'Cake' is a whippet/Africanis SPCA special and she really is a great hound. Like hopefield has said seeing her in full stride is absolutely awesome. I've had her running next me at 49km/h (checked it on the GPS when I got home). They are natural runners and have a great nature. I have however noticed (with greyhounds too) that they can be quite skittish at times, especially with new dogs, but good early socializing will sort that out. 20140517_105130.jpgWhat a great looking dog! We also have a rescue Africanis that i'm sure has some whippet in him as well, the dude can run like anything!I was actually thinking of starting to train him for rides.
Super_mil Posted July 22, 2015 Posted July 22, 2015 Looks like a great pup! Just take it easy on him in the first year or so and don't do big distance and keep the pace pretty mild. Our crew wired and ready to roll. For those interested my better half wrote a piece for FullSus a while back on our experiences with trail dogs

Super_mil Posted July 22, 2015 Posted July 22, 2015 Thanks for the info… Awesome (very focused!) pack you have there... Edit: Very cool article..Thanks Rydek I think the main thing all dog owners need to realise is that at some point your dog will ruin either your ride or possibly someone elses ride. You just have to mitigate the possibility of that happening as much possible. Almost all the issues with having dogs on trails holds true for having kids on trails.
Super_mil Posted July 22, 2015 Posted July 22, 2015 And last one...After KathF won one of the GoPro's on The Hub last year she put this together, which also happens to include the crew...
