Manualling/Bunny hopping on Dual sussers

- Move your body forward and down on the bike.

then in 1 explosive movement.

- Compress the fork

- throw your arms(the bike) out in front of you.

- straighten your legs

- lean back

the faster the better.

Think of it as pivoting around your hips, so you are moving the bike out from under you.

I take no responsibility of any damage or injury from this advice

Edit; Dual or HT doesn't really make much difference, I find them the same. only a rigid fork makes a big difference in the movement.

Going to try again this weekend. I haven't really been moving forward enough to compress forks so perhaps that will make a difference. I take note of your "no responsibility" disclaimer! :D

oh, jeepers - if you haven't been preloading then you're destined to fail (like me)

Yup, somehow I thought my bulk would provide the torque - apparently not as I kept getting about 3cm off the ground and that was that. Let's hope it doesn't go to the opposite extreme and land me on my back!

Strictly you should not have to preload front suspension to manual - that makes it a wheely.

BMXers literally ride their bike out from under them - no jerking they just lean back and trap in one smooth movement.

Nah a wheelie happens when to pedal to keep the front end of the bike up. A manual there is no pedalling involved, but to get the front wheel up you will need to preload the front suspension.

Hardtail is better but having a short stem even better. Most people try to "pluk" the front up, that only throws you off balance.

Don't pick up with your arms but rather the shift in weight of your body. Throw your weight back to the point of no return and catch with another weight shift in the other direction and some brake maybe. It's all in the legs and ass! And never become static, it's a dynamic action and you will lose your balance as soon as you become static. And it helps immensely if you have a brake with good modulation and not much bite, think crappy hydraulic dis brake.

You will notice along the line that your ass is basically behind your rear axle.

A good bunnyhop comes from a manual. Focus on the manual. And everyone can do a semi decent one with enough practice. It took me 3 years to properly learn to manual.

That is what I learned in the videos and it all makes sense. What I can't see is the detail about whether you get below and behind the seat or just behind it. Perhaps a dropper makes it easier?

Just preload the fork and throw yourself backwards and land on you back a few times, you'll soon learn where the balance point is. Grass is better than concrete.

First get used to braking with your wheel in the air. Once you know you can get your front wheel back down in an emergency you have a lot more confidence to throw yourself further back over the rear wheel. Get your bum out low and far back and use your leading foot to push the bike away from you. It takes time but start out with small goals. 2m then 3m then 4m, eventually it will just click.

You don't need to pre-load at all to manual, get your body position back and as low as possible when pushing the bike out in front of you, try pushing the bike fwd with your legs that should get you into the correct position. Biggest mistake is trying to pull the bike up cause this throws your weight fwd, you need to be pushing the pivot point aka rear axel in front of you so the bike comes up by itself... just, for goodness sake, keep your hand on the back brake and be ready :)

you dont have to preload, which is applicable to suspended bikes only anyway, but it wont hurt if you do have a suspended fork up front and use the rebound to help your weight movement. BMXs dont have forks, but can you bunny hop. I bunny hop my road bike no problem, and it has zero suspension. It's all about a sequence of weight distribution done correctly.

some ppl fail to move their weight, because they trying to pull the bike up with their arms alone. The initial pull up comes from moving your entire body mass backward, and then you can use your arms to pull it higher, or rather, pull yourself toward the front so you can get the rear up.

trying to find a vid of the guys competing at a BH tourney. They have a really nice super slo-mo of the action. Watching the BH tourney vid is nice because the guys are aiming for seriously high hops, so their movement is nicely exaggerated, giving you plenty of time to watch the whole sequence in the slo-mo.

Link. i think that's the vid i had in mind, but my interwebs is crawling atm :(

I would suggest you try not to preload any suspension. Its bad form.

regarding a seat height, only the very best can manual comfortably with a seat fully extended. If you are serious about your bike handling skills buy a banger bmx or jumpbike off gumtree, its going to be cheaper than that carbon upgrade goodie you want.

That doesn't help, though. I want to be able to manual on my current bike to improve my rides. It's not just that I want to manual on a bike for fun. Thanks, though

It just makes the learning easier. You can manual any bike...
