Is it ok to be bent over and ........

Is it ok that a LBS quotes you a certain amount for a job and then once it is done charges you almost double?

For example:(happened to my Bro)

Took a wheelset to LBS to have new rims fitted (He provided the rims Stans Crest to Arches)

Was Quoted R 400 per wheel (was told new nipples required which was fine)

Was happy with the quote and gave the go ahead.

Yesterday gets a call saying wheels are ready and the bill is R1300.

He says he had to replace a few spokes which was done but not cleared by my bro.

Now he leaves for 3towers on Thursday which the mech was fully aware of and has no choice but to cough up another $500 or not have a wheelset for the weekend.

Not Square!!!!!!

Small differences (within reason) I think is fine.  But not a 150% increase!

Its actually just over a 61% increase R800 to R1300. Still pretty steep though.

Was it a written quote or just a verbal ball park?

I agree, name and shame. Stuff happens, but that doesn't keep the shop from picking up a phone and consulting. Bad customer service is bad.

Same happened to me. Had to fork out an extra R1000+, due to new spokes and nipples for both wheels.

Had done all the legwork regarding erd, spoke length, nipple type, etc. Was going to only need to rebuild the hubs onto new rims, nothing else needed to change.

This was verified by various parties, including some of our esteemed professional wheelbuilders resident on TheHubSA.

I relayed this info when dropping of the wheels for rebuild.

On collection....bang.....blindsided!!!!!

Won't be back to that LBS, ever!!!!

Expensive mistake they made, as I am in the market for a new ride for me and for my daughter at the end of the year.

Consumer Protection Act covers him. Pay the agreed amount and walk out. To go above a quote you HAVE to contact the owner and receive agreement to proceed.

Could be a few things though.

The ERD on the two rims is not the same, it is a very small difference so it is very likely the same spokes could have been used.

They should give a breakdown of exactly how many spokes they replaced.

Nipples aren't cheap, but the original quote was in the ballpark.

Then was the tubeless tape provided or did they have to do this too ?

There is a possibility that they charged honestly.

I just don't understand why people find to so hard to actually support the more honest shops.

Always amazes me why some shops dont call before going ahead if there are extras involved....

How many spokes were replaced and how much do they normaly cost, as much as R500?

Name them, lets see if they respond with their side of the story.

Wont be the first time that a customer forgot that there could be extras involved (in the case of a wheel rebuild its pretty logical that some spokes will need to be replaced).

Not saying this happened with your bro

I thought to swop out rims a full set of new spokes would be necessary?
But they should have called you and discussed this.

My bad, I just read R400

but for R500 extra call and confirm its not that difficult

Agreed, its poor form, but if the original quote was a loose / ballpark figure figure the shop probably thought that an extra R500 is not material, after all that's less than a good tyre costs nowadays.

  1. not if the ERD of the rims is similar. (which they are)
  2. the wheelset is new (which it is only about 400km old)
  3. the guy doing the job confirmed that he would not need to replace spokes once he had seen the wheel. (now i understand that some spokes might need replacing, fair enough but R500 worth?)

(guess it is just easier and quicker to cut the rim off the Hub)
