Different opinions are great, but me personally myself, I don't see the sarcasm in that illustration, its just plain silly, insensitive and offensive.

Bit like ...

Given the Burry tragedy, this really ain't funny. Bit like joking about the gas chambers. You don't. There is no humour to be had.

That Kosmo is really the crux of it.

It is really sad that a high profile cyclist had to be killed to make the tragedy of what happens on our roads public and make people aware of the issue.

Bruce Reyneke lost his son a few years back in a tragic accident as well.

Many cyclists have been killed over the years, it is something most cyclists should be very passionate about, the plea of road safety.

It saddens me to see that some aren't.

We are all fickle and tend to see things as offensive only when it applies to us directly .

As I said it blows my mins to see that some "liberals" don't find the dog offensive.

Again, only when it applies it seems.

Bottom line, cyclists being killed by motorists is a very sensitive issue at the moment and the illustration and it's so called sarcastic outlook is not apt for this very moment.

94.7 as the media sponsor of the road race should never have allowed the image to see the voting process.

The picture can be interpreted by anyone in any way they see fit.

It is offensive to some and funny to others (sorry I meant sarcastic)

I don't have a problem with any of that, daily we see offensive stuff and we can choose to ignore it at will.

The fact that 94.7 accepted this as a winning image and it offended the majority of the cycling community, is where the real issue lies.

I like Alec Riddle's responses on twitter, for a guy like him to become so verbal about it speaks volumes.

Somehow, I doubt that was the artist's intention when he drew / illustrated that pic. I sincerely doubt that he was advocating the murder we see on our roads each day. More like highlighting it.

As I said much earlier in the thread (and I don't consider this person an artist, just an opportunist) this is my interpretation of it.

Many people can't wait to see a cyclist knocked over, even Gareth Cliff at one stage commented how he has no compassion for us being on the roads.

This person entered a competition not as an artist (|if he was the quality of his work would have been better) but as an opportunist.

Someone already mentioned he does not look like a cyclist according to his FB profile.

I feel he went for a 50/50 hit rate "get the cyclists votes or get the votes of the people who hate the cyclists

The fact that the knocked over cyclist has a joyride expression ,gives me the impression that this guys is most likely on the "hate" side of the fence.

yeah, fair enough - I see your point.

@WhackheadS: Winning R94 700 this morning. The majority voted for Franco-Juan Nolte. #showusyour947 h

Cute cartoon, this is what it looks like when it really happens. Not so funny anymore.post-16512-0-28149600-1412754697_thumb.jpg

My response to this issue posted on the 94.7 webpage......

"Personally I do find the image offensive. Why? Because I am a cyclist and the cycling community is pretty much under siege on the roads of Johannesburg, I know this because I am part of the cycling community. Unfortunatly those people who have commented that they find nothing offensive or disturbing in the image (special mention to Bronwyn and Mark) are most probably those who are not exposed to the reality the image projects. I am pretty sure their opinions would be different if their son / daughter / mother / father was killed while cycling on our roads. Perhaps in their defence they have no idea how many cyclists get killed and maimed on our roads every year and their perspective is based on their knowledge. This however is no excuse for a station like 94.7 who knows all too well the challenges faced by the cycling community especially with their headline sponsorship of the 2nd largest cycling event on the planet. If the argument holds true that freedom of speech is the overiding factor here and that people should be free to express what 94.7 means to them I wonder if the people who dont find the image offensive would indeed find it offensive if the taxi was replaced with woman and children being raped and the pothole replaced with dying AIDS orphans. Those, too, are realities of Joburg life and I have a right to show this, dont I? Yes I do, but is it appropriate? I think not."

So - the question is - what is 94.7/Whackoff going to do to improve matters relating to cycle safety?

CLEARLY - they need to work hard at this....

It was a stupid competition held by a stupid radio station and hosted by a stupid DJ. The fact that a stupid picture won really doesn't surprise me at all. We're all fully aware of the many problems that Jo'burg has. There is nothing clever/artistic about that picture, it's just shock tactics. And its racist even more than it is insensitive. Maybe that R94 700 will buy him half a clue, but I doubt it.
