'cos (in my eyes, at least) it highlights all that is wrong with SA at the moment...

I don't think it comes close highlighting what is wrong with SA or showing the heartbeat of the city. It is rather a self centered, narrow minded look at the city from one segment of society's view.

If people look carefully at a taxi they will see it filled with single mothers who got up at 4am to spend hours and half their pay for the day on the only transport option they have to try and feed the hungry mouths at home.

While I strongly disagree with some taxis disregarding the laws of the road (just like many other cars) and am saddened by every cyclists being knocked down taxis are not something put on the road to injure cyclists and annoy people.

Perhaps 94.7 should diversify a bit because based on voting it looks like their listeners are all about to immigrate to AUS.

It was a stupid competition held by a stupid radio station and hosted by a stupid DJ. The fact that a stupid picture won really doesn't surprise me at all. We're all fully aware of the many problems that Jo'burg has. There is nothing clever/artistic about that picture, it's just shock tactics. And its racist even more than it is insensitive. Maybe that R94 700 will buy him half a clue, but I doubt it.

You forgot the the most important part.....the "stupid people"  that voted for it.

People making mountains out of the proverbial molehill and directing it at 94.7 but at the end of the day it was the most popular image amongest the participating audience.

That's the worrying part.

Don't you guys see that this image has so many ways of being interpreted? That is the problem right there! Look how spirited this debate is right here! As cyclists you don't want to see the malice in this pic. Lets pretend you're the freak who wrote the clogdite jungle story or many of the other anti cyclist types who spew their vitriol. Do you genuinely believe they will look at that image and see the sarcasm you are advocating?? What do you think their future interaction will be with cyclists based on the feelings they have taken away from this pic? 94.7 as the title sponsor of a CYCLING race in Jozi can not be seen to condone any perceptions that would be encouraged by the images.

Then there's all the other no cycling stuff that has the same perspective issues about each of their references.... = EPIC FAIL!

(Queuing Wyatt, so that he can have the last word, which should be how to engage and get behind and participate with bicyclesafetySA for those that do not know! Suspect many out of town types have not heard of this yet...)

True, personaly i dont think people voted for it purely because of the cyclist issue or why they actually voted for it...maybe it was the dog driving the taxi that appealed to them?

Or maybe the other images were really crap.

Humour has a time and place. Trying to take the mickey about someone getting hit in a road accident and turning it into a weight joke is poor form Chukks! Doesn't read well... But ironically it is a metaphor for what the issue with this pic is! Misplaced humour that is open to other interpretation too...

@WhackheadS: Winning R94 700 this morning. The majority voted for Franco-Juan Nolte. #showusyour947 h

13 pages of people getting their tits in a knot, the original point was lost after page 3. It then became nitpicking of words.

Vettie doesnt look like that in real life, hence my joke.

As I said much earlier in the thread (and I don't consider this person an artist, just an opportunist) this is my interpretation of it.

Many people can't wait to see a cyclist knocked over, even Gareth Cliff at one stage commented how he has no compassion for us being on the roads.

Bingo - this is the sad and true part about this, and why I reject any claim around satire etc..  Check the comments section on any news site every time a cyclist gets knocked down.  There is a large proportion of our society that literally hate cyclists and reckon they deserve to be run over.

But it actually goes even further.  Unlike racists, misogynists and the like who generally will keep their prejudices to themselves and claim to not be, in certain circles its actually "cool" to hate cyclists.  The poster / cartoon / whatever plays to this.

The only "funny" thing about this is that 94.7 held this competition as a brand building exercise.  This could make textbooks one day for brand FAIL.  What a bunch of morons.

Wouldn't it be MacDriver?

The station should donate advertising time worth R95k to bicyclingsafety. The driver offends me equally as much as the cyclist being hit. If this is the part of Jozie they want to highlight for a feelgood event their brand is sad.

At cost..... not at retail....
