Much like my pet peeve of ticket scalpels buying up golden circle tickets and selling them for up to 3x face value. As far as I know this is NOT illegal but simply against the T&cs of the ticket issuer - as long as the market exists it will continue

I hear what u saying, but personally I see it as supply and demand I have done a few Argus I booked the plane ticket I got the hotel room, slipped on the entry do I now loose ticket and room for a couple hundred bucks???

Anyone got 2 argus entries....???? PM me

I have no problem with you doing whatever it takes. I also think a person should be able to sell for whatever someone is prepared to pay, BUT buying the entries to sell at a profit a week later should not be allowed (blocked for results/ entries thereafter). If no transfers are allowed until much later it should limit scalping a lot.

....about just as moral on fixing the price of bread, or first putting cash down before being admitted for medical services, or in cahoots to increase the price of cycling kit while you can order it for cheaper over the interwebs......your demand determine the morality of the supply.......no demand = no supply = no morality question.

You make no sense

Yip.....might be the case.....blame it on the hot mineral water pool I am currently sitting in and enjoying a cold Heineken on the side.......luckily my communication device is waterproof........paid premium price for these luxuries.

Enough money is being made from us cyclist, we have to deal with overpriced items all the time, but these guys that buys entries to races to later sell them for a profit is just wrong, I feel this needs to be ironed out right now, I wont buy a ticked for more that what the original guy paid (unless I support a charity) I would rather not do the event, I ask all of you to do the same,

Why is it wrong? Willing buyer willing seller.

What would happen if people bought 10 tickets at a time and sold 8 at double the price? If that happens with the first 1000 online it will be a disaster. (I agree in general though)

Have to agree that the principle of buying to sell for a profit is wrong. This is a RECREATIONAL activity for most of us... if u want to make money, get a real bloody job!

Btw, I dont blame guys that booked airfare and hotels early for paying a premium. Its a pity they have to be forced down that road. I waited till I had an entry to book flights and prices were already ridiculous!

I am pretty sure an argus entry cannot be sold for more. Will check

Yip. from: http://www.cycletour.co.za/index.php/enter/rules-and-regulations/

1.4       If entrants are unable to take part in the event and wish to have their entry substituted, they may ask the substitute rider to reimburse them but they may not ask for more than what they originally paid for their entry. The substitute rider must pay an additional entry fee. Riders must ensure that the substitute rider follows the correct substitution procedure which is found at www.cycletour.co.za. If the correct procedure is not adhered to and the substitute rider is found riding illegally, both parties could be sanctioned.

I'm normally for free markets, but in this case, I agree with this rule. When you have people buying entries purely for arbitrage, it's taking money away for charities.

Must say though, as much as most people undercut/offer for a product, if you are willing to pay more for an entry, then so be it. We live in a capitalist society, and supply and demand prevails.... I dont like it sometimes eg, when you want the Argus entry and it costs double, but then again sometimes you get the free entry eg, the 3 Tower entry.

But I really want one entry

Even bought a charity entry. They have my money now ( but when I wanted to enter it said "charity group" full.

How will a "black market" entry works?

R1800 to the original buyer for the two entries?

Then Feb next year also R430 subsitution fee to Cape Town Cycle Tour?

Eish. That is sad

I got the same email from CTCT stating that there will be 3000 more entries available

Part of the email reads

All available general entries were snapped up in just eight hours when they opened last month, taking us by surprise and leaving many local would-be entrants disappointed. You are receiving this email because you are either one of the lucky ones that got an entry, or because you rode the Cape Town Cycle Tour recently.
The GOOD NEWS either way is that we have decided to reallocate some entries which had been reserved for various groups and international participants.  By doing this we will be making an additional 3 000 individual entries available to local riders.

Entries made available last month had been allocated on a first-come, first-served basis, but the additional 3 000 will be assigned through a “random selection” process. Riders wishing to secure an entry will be given a week to register their interest on our website.  The available entries will then be allocated to individuals on a ‘ballot-style’ basis, after which fees will become payable.  We believe this to be the fairest way to allocate the remaining entries without prejudicing participants and overloading our systems.

my oh my oh my oh my. Let's just put our panties back on and worry about the important things out there, like the ebola virus, jacob zuma's corruption and dane piedt's shoulder. I don't think it's ethical to charge ridiculous amounts for an argus(sorry, i'm still calling it that in my mind) entry but it's not such a big deal.

there are threeFive things here that make me just wonder what the fuss is.

A) the rules. Yes it is against the cycletour rules to scalp the tickets for a higher price. But remember when a rule is stupid, you may ignore it. We live in an open free market economy, if something has high demand you may charge more for it. How the hell are they even going to follow this up? They would actually need to get bank statements from BOTH parties to prove it. If it's cash they're f@#$%ed. The easy run around is to sell an argus entry and a box of smarties for R1000,. There's definitely no law against selling smarties for R570.

If only people cared as much about this law.....which gets broken, a lot

2.17     A rider shall not dispose of any litter along the Cycle Tour course except in refuse bins.

R) The money. ok, so the Argus(a 'charity') is missing out on the extra money that the scalping is making. hmmmm, not really. For a start they've already hiked the price point so there's more in the kitty to start with. Also, if you really think people are doing this deliberately, you need to remember that each scalped ticket that is successfully substituted nets another R220 into the coffers.

G)the numbers. It is common knowledge that the Argus is hugely oversubscribed and gets sold out six months before race date. Come feb there are loads of entries going for a sub some gratis. Come race day and about 10000 people don't even turn up. If you buy an overinflated entry now, you're either desperate or impatient. Also it's not that easy to accumulate these high demand argus entries before you 'sell' them on. you need to actually register each entry to a particular person and go through a whole rigmarole. I don't think this is a widespread practice, a few chancers here and there but most people want to ride.

U) should chill out more

S) should also remember that the cycletour guys got burnt before with their silly rules with the borat incident.

Diffetence between original entry fee and selling price.........skoolgeld for Procrastination 101.......if you snooze you loose.

BTW.......don't blame the seller if you are willing to pay premium price......he is also taking a risk in not being able to sell the product.

Dont agree with the snooze u loose. I tried 3 times to enter the CTCT. Managed to get an entry at 21:30 that night.
